About the initiative
The Global Entrepreneurship Summer School (GESS) is a global initiative of six universities in Munich, Mexico City and Shanghai that is organized by the Social Entrepreneurship Akademie.
In the spirit of promoting “billion-dollar projects to foster societal change”, GESS was launched in 2008 as a joint initiative of Munich’s four entrepreneurship centers (4E) at the following universities:
- Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (University of Excellence)
- Technical University of Munich (University of Excellence)
- Munich University of Applied Sciences
- Universität der Bundeswehr München
In 2016, GESS was brought to the next level thanks to a partnership with Tecnológico de Monterrey (Mexico), Tongji University (China) and the support of the SAP Foundation.
Together we are looking for young leaders from all over the world who are keen to solve the world’s biggest challenges through entrepreneurial means.
About the program
During the Global Entrepreneurship Summer School (GESS), 105 motivated students located in three cities around the world – Munich, Shanghai and Mexico City – will experience a unique learning opportunity with a social impact. We encourage students from all over the world to develop innovative solutions that can meet the world’s biggest challenges in a sustainable manner.
At GESS, you will work in international and interdisciplinary teams to develop ideas that present both a sustainable impact on society and a self-sustaining, profitable business model. Over the course of 7 days, you will learn about entrepreneurship, develop your own sustainable business ideas and build a long-lasting network of talented and international friends. A series of interactive lectures by renowned entrepreneurs will inform the project work and provide complementary knowledge (e.g., business planning or topic-specific issues). Throughout GESS, your team will be partnered with a coach who will provide you with feedback and assistance on your project and business plan and assist you with any technical questions. At the end of the course, you and your team will pitch your idea to an audience of more than 250 guests – and you should definitely not miss the celebration afterwards!

OUR PHILOSOPHY
The Global Entrepreneurship Summer School (GESS) approaches the important role of combining education, entrepreneurship, and networking for sustainable development.
The vision of GESS is based on the philosophy of creating claim “Billion Dollar Projects to Foster Societal Change“. We want to encourage and connect talented students from all over the world to challenge society’s problems by entrepreneurial means. We want our students to think big and contribute to sustainable change in the dimension of billion.
The GESS started in 2008 as a collaborative project of the four leading university-based entrepreneurship centers in Munich, along with the Social Entrepreneurship Akademie and has become a global cooperation of six universities in three continents – that’s why we believe in the power of entrepreneurial collaboration and thinking for a better and sustainable future.
WHO CAN APPLY?
All undergraduate and graduate students, aged 18 – 35, from all fields (e.g., design, computer science, business economics, humanities, social sciences) are welcome to apply. You must be enrolled at a university at some point during the calendar year. For example, if you are only enrolled until February, you can still apply even though you will not be enrolled in September. Our enrollment policy also applies to graduate applicants, including MBA and PhD students.

WHAT COSTS ARE COVERED?
While attending GESS, participants will be provided with full room and board and public transportation costs occurring during the program (such as subway tickets) will be covered. You are responsible for covering any expenses occurring outside of the program dates, as well as during additional, individually organized activities – therefore please make sure to bring enough spending money with you.
WHAT ARE THE EVALUATION CRITERIA?
We encourage you to focus on demonstrating the following qualities in your application:
- You think and act entrepreneurially.
- You are deeply motivated to find answers to the most challenging problems in our global society.
- You have strong proficiency in English.
- Ideally, you are engaged in student initiatives or community efforts.
- You are committed to peace and to acting in a responsible manner.
- You are a strong team player, open-minded and interested in working in international and interdisciplinary teams.
