The 12th edition of the Summer School in Cinema Human Rights and Advocacy is a training initiative jointly developed by EIUC and CHRA.

The 7-day intense training is aimed at young professionals wishing to broaden their understanding on the connections between human rights, films, digital media and video advocacy to share ideas and to foster participatory and critical thinking on urgent human rights issues, debate with experts and filmmakers from all over the world during the 74th Venice international Film Festival and learn how to use films as a tool for social and cultural change. 

Target: Graduates, professionals of the human rights, media, NGO and advocacy sector and anyone who uses or is interested in using audio-visual media as a tool for promoting social change are encouraged to apply to the Summer School.

The School selects a maximum of 30 participants.

Course language: all courses will be held in English. It is, therefore, essential that all participants understand and speak English fluently.

Eligibility: Participants are selected on the basis on their motivation, practice and commitment to human rights, advocacy and media issues as well as their background and professional experiences. Gender and regional balance is taken into account in order to form a homogeneous group.

Programme

The Summer School offers an exciting programme of lectures, film screenings, discussions and working groups that combine human rights expertise, media studies and video advocacy strategies. The eight sessions develop issues relating to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights illustrated in Films, a History of Human Rights Cinema, Freedom of Expression and Censorship, the Role of the Media in Advancing Human Rights Causes, the Use of Video in Human Rights Documentation and Advocacy, Production and Distribution of Human Rights Films and Social Documentaries and Documentary Film Project Development. Each module is illustrated by film or documentary screenings.

As part of the programme participants are required to watch and analyse a selection of human rights related screenings at the 74th Venice International Film Festival. Whenever possible, filmmakers, jury members and critics from the cinema world are invited to participate to discussions with the summer school participants. Participants will be given a 3-day Cinema accreditation to the Film Festival giving access to a selection of festival screenings.

The school programme may be subject to changes during the film festival period in order to accommodate festival screenings and meetings with festival’s personalities with teaching sessions.

The programme doesn’t include technical aspects of filmmaking and film production.

Fees

The enrolment fee for the Summer School in Cinema Human Rights and Advocacy is to € 1700,00 and it includes:

  • Tuition fee
  • Lunches on class days
  • Accommodation in a shared double room for 7 nights (check in 27 August – check out 3 September) in Venice at the Crociferi residence
  • Weekly pass for local transportation
  • 3 day Cinema Accreditation to the Venice International Film Festival
  • Certification at the end of the course

The enrolment fee without accommodation is € 1300,00.

Please note that the enrolment of the selected participants will be made on a “first come first served” basis. We therefore invite you to proceed as soon as possible to assure you a place in our course.

The enrolment will only be final with the confirmation that the payment of the fee has been received by the secretariat, therefore we kindly ask you to send a scanned copy of the international bank transfer to chra@eiuc.org

Please note that EIUC does not offer scholarship at this point in time. 

Cancellation and Refund Policies

Cancellation by applicant:

  • Cancellations received before 15 May 2017 will be fully reimbursed minus 50,00 € of administrative fees;
  • Cancellations received from 15 May till 21 June 2017 will be reimbursed 50% of the total fee;
  • Cancellations after 21 June 2017 will not be reimbursed.

Cancellation by EIUC:

  • EIUC is not responsible for any extra expenses (i.e. travel costs, Visa, etc.) incurred by the participant if a course is cancelled.
  • If the course is cancelled due to any unforeseen circumstances such as weather or natural disaster, the participant is entitled to reschedule for a future session of the course.
  • EIUC reserves the right to cancel any course due to insufficient number of applications up to the deadline for enrolment. Notice will be provided with the full refund of registration fees minus 50,00 € of administrative fees.
