Summer Course for the Study of the Arts in Flanders
Belgian Fin de Siècle 1880-1914 (June 24 - July 4, 2018)

The aim of the Summer Course is to bring to Flanders, annually, a select group of 20 national and international, highly qualified young researchers. They are presented with an intensive 11-day programme of lectures, discussions, and visits related to a specific course theme within Flemish art. This theme varies annually, with a focus each year on a different art-historical period.

The Summer Course provides the participants with a clear insight into the Flemish art collections from the period at hand, as well as into the available and most suited research methods, the state of the research and the research needs. We expect active participation from the participants, with a discussion following each lecture.

After three successful Summer Courses, we now focus on Belgian Fin de Siècle (1880-1914). This Summer Course takes place from June 24 through July 4, 2018. It is coordinated by the Museum of Fine Arts in Ghent, the Royal Museum of FIne Arts in Antwerp, Mu.ZEE Ostend and the Flemish Art Collection. Excursions will be made to Ghent, Bruges, Ostend, Brussels, Paris, Namur and Antwerp. The language of the summer course is English. Some lectures or guided visits may be in French.

Participation fee and grants

The participation fee of the Summer Course is fixed at €1089 per person. The fee includes the full 11-day programme, 10 overnight hotel stays in a single-occupancy room, all transportation within the programme, all entry tickets, 2 receptions, 5 lunches and 5 dinners. Not included in the participation fee is the transportation to and from Belgium.

To facilitate students with limited financial means the organisation of the Summer Course for the Study of the Arts in Flanders has made available 2 grants of €544,5 each. The recipients of the grant will pay a reduced participation fee of €544,5 instead of the regular fee.

Thanks to the generous support of the Samuel H. Kress Foundation's History of Art Grants Program 2 US students and citizens are offered a grant that will fully cover the programme fee and round trip flights between Belgium and the US.
