APPLICATION FORM

There are no specific forms needed for the Education Fellowship Grant except for the biosketches for key personnel. 
The current National Institutes of Health (NIH) biosketch format should be used. 
Blank/plain (8 ½ x 11”) pages/paper should be used for the application, except for the biosketches. Font type and size for the application should be Arial 11 point, including literature cited. Single line spacing is acceptable. Figures, charts, tables, and legends or captions may be in smaller size font but must be clear and legible. The margins must be top: 0.8, bottom: 0.5, left: 0.5, right: 0.5.

PURPOSE OF THE AWARD

The Education Fellowship Grant strives to foster innovation in teaching, education, and educational research in emergency medicine for faculty-, fellow-, resident- and medical student-level learners. The mission of the grant is to develop the academic potential of the selected fellow by providing support for a dedicated two-year training period, including pursuit and preferably completion of an advanced degree in education.

EXPECTATIONS OF THE EDUCATION FELLOWSHIP GRANT RECIPIENT

The Education Fellowship Grant recipient is expected to:

Show potential for leadership in medical education, including residency programs, medical student clerkships, and medical school courses.

Execute a novel educational project that can be used by educators within SAEM and emergency medicine. The project should be measurable, reproducible, and its outcomes able to be disseminated to the SAEM membership.

Embark on and complete a mentored educational training program, that includes elements appropriate to the training plan and needs and educational career development of the fellow, such as a degree program, training fellowship, program of similar caliber, or an equally worthy activity. This training program must be well described in the application.

ELIGIBILITY

The Fellow Applicant:

An applicant for the Education Fellowship Grant must:

Be a member of SAEM in good standing at application deadline and during the entire award period.

Be board eligible or certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine or American Board of Osteopathic Emergency Medicine and practicing in an emergency care setting. Senior/final year residents (3rd or 4th year, as applicable to the applicant’s residency program) in good standing to graduate from an ACGME accredited emergency medicine residency program may also apply, but must complete their residency program before the start of the award period.

Not have completed more than one year of an education fellowship at the start of the award period.

Not have received an Education Fellowship Grant previously.

Provide evidence of a history of experience with, and desire to become or continue to be, a lifelong educator in emergency medicine. This evidence includes involvement in medical educational committees; publications in medical education; completion or attendance of coursework relevant to medical education; or other education or educational-research focused activities. Involvement in these activities is expected to reflect an applicant’s level of experience as an educator.

Express and if possible provide evidence of a commitment to leadership in emergency medicine education in his/her current or prior work, or show potential for serving as a future leader in emergency medicine education.

Demonstrate a sustained interest in and commitment to emergency medicine education and an education career. This demonstrated commitment may include previous participation in educational activities related to emergency medicine or another field, peer-reviewed publications, current or previous educational research, presentations of educational scholarly activity at scientific meetings, and engagement in local, regional, national and international activities focused on research and emergency medicine-focused education. Applicants will be judged and scored according to their expressed and demonstrated commitment to these areas. Greater consideration and potentially higher scores will be given to applicants who can demonstrate this commitment.

Demonstrate evidence of involvement in SAEM activities and functions. Demonstrated involvement includes number of years as a member of SAEM and participation in SAEM activities and functions (e.g., SAEM presentations and committee membership). Applicants will be judged and scored according to their expressed and demonstrated commitment to SAEM. Greater consideration and potentially higher scores will be given to applicants who can demonstrate this commitment.

The Fellow Applicant's Host Institution

The applicant’s host institution must:

Provide adequate administrative and clerical support to the fellow, including, but not limited to, office space, administrative support, and information systems.

Demonstrate a track record of involvement and commitment to medical education at local, state, and national levels. In the majority and ideal circumstances, the host institution should have an accredited emergency medicine residency program.

Demonstrate the availability of faculty, resident and /or medical student teaching opportunities for the fellow.

Provide opportunities for the fellow to work as an emergency medicine physician (attending, fellow, instructor, or similar), but shall not require fellows to perform clinical duties in excess of 16 hours per week. The applicant may work as an emergency medicine physician at a location other than the host institution.

THE FELLOWSHIP MENTOR

The fellowship mentor:

Should have expertise in education, such as working as a medical educator, and/or expertise in educational research, including publication of original research and/or educational innovations in peer-reviewed journals.

Should show evidence of involvement in education at state, regional, and national levels, such as participation in committees or serving in an administrative capacity.

Should be actively involved in educational roles and teaching at his/her local residency program and/ or medical school.

Must be directly responsible for the supervision and oversight of the fellow and have sufficient time available to ensure an optimal mentored relationship.

FINANCIAL AWARD:

The Education Fellowship Grant will provide a total of up to $50,000 per year for two years, contingent on the availability of funds from the SAEMF. The SAEMF Education Fellowship Grant funds only may be used for fellow salary. Fringe benefits are permissible in addition to salary, but the total of salary and fringe benefits may not exceed $50,000 per year for two years. No additional costs are supported by SAEMF; any other costs are the responsibility of the fellow’s host institution or another group specified in the application.

SAEMF grants are dependent upon the amount of available funds from the SAEMF. SAEMF may discontinue, postpone, or change grant funding based on the amount of funds available. The number and monetary amount of awards granted depend on the quality of applications and status of the SAEMF endowment funds. 

The submission of detailed budgets for the use of funds for the grant are required as part of the application and again for award recipients during the reporting period of the award. Costs included in the Education Fellowship Grant budget as provided by the SAEMF Education Fellowship Grant should not exceed $50,000 per year. However, in addition to the funds from SAEMF, the budget justification should reflect all pending and active sources of funding relevant to the project. 

Failure to meet the award guidelines or inability of the awardee to complete the term of the award shall result in the need to return residual funds to the SAEMF. 

Funds for the second training year will be made available to the host institution only after submission of a progress report that is judged by the SAEM Grants Committee to demonstrate satisfactory accomplishment of proposed goals in the first year of the grant period. 

For projects requiring the host institution’s Institutional Review Board (IRB) or equivalent approval, funds will not be dispersed until IRB approval is obtained. Award extensions may be made at the discretion of the Grants Committee on a case-by-case basis.
