Crafting Genealogies in Balochistan:

The religious Aspect of Tribalism

Vahe Boyajian

Institute of Oriental Studies,

Russian-Armenian (Slavonic) University

The paper deals with the ongoing process of changes in “tribalism” – a phenomenon that has long formed and featured the social and political structures in Balochistan, accentuating specifically the role of the genealogies of the Balochi tribes. In the Islamic environment of Balochistan, the traditional aspects of tribalism currently undergo major transformations – in some aspects completely vanishing – thus, creating a space for developing new manifestations of Baloch identity. Genealogies of the Balochi tribes appear as an important tool for maintaining the affiliation with both the religious and political figures of the past. Without a solid “shajaraname” – genealogical tree – the members of tribe become vulnerable in facing the challenges of the above mentioned transformations. Certain Balochi tribes possess century old genealogical trees attested and preserved in handwritten forms, meanwhile many other tribes under the competing circumstances over social and political statuses and authority feel free to “craft” fresh genealogies presenting prominent religious figures mainly from Sufi tradition.

On the Genesis of the Yezidi Community and the Problem of the Yezidi Identity

Arakelova V.A.

Institute of Oriental Studies,

Russian-Armenian (Slavonic) University, Yerevan

Scholars of Yezidism trace back the formation of the first Yezidi community to the ‘Adawiya Sufi order, which, in fact, became the backbone of a principally new group. Its shaping against the background of the colourful ethnic and religious map of Northern Mesopotamia resulted in the emergence of a new ethno-religious identity. Being a closed esoteric group with a unique non-missionary religion, the Yezidis community has always had a clear vector of identity development, which can be characterized as drive to ethnicity. Today, most of the Yezidis identify themselves as representatives of a separate ethnic group, although the issue is often being politicized and misinterpreted.

There can be no doubt, that the early Yezidi community was as multi-ethnic, as its forerunner, the ‘Adawiya order had been. The sheykhi caste must have been primarily represented by the Arabs, some of them, including Sheikh ‘Adi, the Sufi Master and founder of the ‘Adawiyya, having belonged of the Omayyad dynasty. Laymen could include people of different ethnic and linguistic backgrounds – Arabs, Kurds, Syrians. The process of dissociation with Islam naturally resulted in the formation of a closed endogamous group, what, in its turn, shaped a distinct Yezidi identity.

The Yezidi tradition itself has preserved several legends about the origin of the Yezidi people: one of them has obvious Abrahamic roots, while two other belong the Iranian religious and cultural continuum; none of them having allusion to any ethnic group, mythical or real.

Thus, both historical analysis and that of the proper tradition point to the Yezidis’ well-shaped, distinct and unique identity. Its markers are primarily based on the peculiarities of Yezidi religious system; yet, two of them, which can be characterized as definitions ex negation, refer to its emphasized non-Muslim and non-Kurdish aspects.

♂ - 15; adultus-2, maturus- 11, senilis-2, ?-1.

♀ - 11; adultus-3, maturus- 3, senilis-2,  ?-5.

Abstract. Genetic structure of Western SIberian indigenous people (15 peoples) was studied using DNA markers of genes determining metabolic reactions (ADH1B  rs1229984, ALDH2 rs671, CYP2E1 rs3813867, LCT rs4988235, ApoE rs769452, AMY2A rs104650, TREH rs2276064, SI rs781470490) and the immune response ( CCR2 rs1799864, CCR5 rs333).

In 2004-2018, expeditions to various regions of Western Siberia (from Urals to Yenisei), biological samples and information were collected to study gene pools of indigenous peoples based in these territories. A fragment of research is being discussed, including study of population frequencies and ecogeographical trends in the spread of ethanol metabolism genes (ADH1B rs1229984, ALDH2 rs671, CYP2E1 rs3813867), lipid, carbohydrate metabolism (LCT rs4988235, ApoE rs769452, AMY2A rs104650, TREH rs2276064 , SI rs781470490), vitamin D ( VDR rs2228570, VDR rs1544410), as well as chemokine receptor genes that affect efficiency of the immune system (CCR2 rs1799864, CCR5 rs333).The total sample size of the surveyed indigenous peoples was 1,692 people, of whom 1,145 belong to indigenous populations from south of Western Siberia (11 peoples of the Altai-Sayan highlands) and 547 subjects were from central and northern parts of the West Siberian Plain (7 ethnoterritorial groups of Tobol-Irtysh Siberian Tatars and 2 ethnoterritorial Khanty groups).

The indigenous population of Western Siberia is represented by peoples whose developmentm until recentlym took place in conditions of relative isolation under the influence of several natural, climatic and ethnosocial factors. In historical retrospect, an undoubted contribution to formation of Siberian populations genetic structure was made by the particularities of life, including the practiced life support systems, the nutrition factor, and the epidemiological situation in places of compact settlement.

Results of the study confirm the high genetic heterogeneity of Western Siberian indigenous peoples. The “peaks” of the allelic frequencies CCR5 rs333 were revealed in the mountain taiga Shors (CCR5 * del32 = 0.184), CCR2 rs1799864 in the Khakas-Sagais (CCR2 * 64I = 0.593) and several others. The interpopulation subdivision (GST) varied depending on complex of genes and principles of sample grouping.According to genes of ethanol biotransformation, GST was 3.22, and the genes of protein, lipid and carbohydrate metabolism were 3 times higher - GST = 9.21. Obtained values of genetic distances (d) between the studied peoples, in general, correspond to territorial distances. In relation to allele frequencies of studied gene, complex, clear geographic trends are traced from the south-east to north-west of studied indigenous peoples area of settlement.

Starvation May Curtail the Life Span of Men Via Shortening of Telomere Length and Change the Type of Inheritance of Telomere Length in Generations

Introduction

Telomeres are special nucleoprotein complexes that consist of repeats of the TTAGGG sequence located at the ends of chromosomes. Telomeres shorten with each mitotic cycle and a strong connection between telomere dynamics and the processes that determine the life span has been suggested. Compelling evidence has been collected showing that telomere length (TL) is substantially heritable and parallelly, that environmental/lifestyle factors have also been associated with changes in TL over time.  At the same time, the data regarding the mode of inheritance and differences in parental impact are contradictive: some studies concluded a stronger maternal than paternal inheritance while the other studies found no significant difference between mother–offspring and father–offspring telomere length regression. In the current work, we evaluated the influence of parental factors on leukocyte TL (LTL) of offspring in

a Chuvash population that was comprised of survivors of the mass famine of 1922–1923 and in these survivors’ descendants.

Materials and methods

The tested cohort consisted of native Chuvash men (n = 678) and women (n = 647) who were born between 1909 and 1980 and who resided in small villages in the Chuvash Republic of the

Russian Federation. Data were gathered during 3 expeditions undertaken in 1994, 1999, and 2002. With the use of this method of gathering the study cohort, we were able to treat age and birth year as independent variables (i.e., after adjustment for age, we were able to analyze how

LTL correlates with a birth year in the interval between 1909 and 1980). The DNA of peripheral blood leukocytes was used to measure the telomere length with a quantitative polymerase chain reaction technique. To investigate the correlation between LTL in different family members, Pearson’s partial correlation with age- and sex adjustment was performed.

Results

In our previous study, we estimated family correlations and the heritability of LTL. Familial correlations were found to be significant for all categories of family member (parent-offspring:  r = 0.331; P = 0.000282, n = 1120) which include a weak significant correlation between spouses. The heritability of LTL in the tested cohort was estimated to be 0.63. To examine the famine influence on the LTL we arbitrarily divided the sample as follows: (1) individuals born between 1909 -1921 years, (2) individuals born between 1922 -1923 years, (3)individuals born between 1924-1928 years and (4) individuals born  after  1929 years, (justification for subdivision to 4 groups see in our publication 2016) To estimate the extent of the familial and possible genetic influences on LTL levels , we made pedigree-based variance decomposition analysis using the statistical package MAN-7 (Malkin and Ginsburg 2007). This program finds the best fitting and most parsimonious model of trait variability and produces maximum likelihood estimates of genetic and various common family environment components and the corresponding standard errors based on pedigree data. This method allows the total phenotypic variation of the studied trait (VPH) to be partitioned into a number of components, according to the  contributing factors: additive genetic  component (VAD), spouse environment component (VSP), common household  environment  component  (VHS), and  shared siblings environment (VSB), which is specific for siblings raised together. The unexplained residual influences component was defined as VRS. It should be mentioned that because our sample has a familial structure, the above correlation estimates, and in particular p-values, may be biased. Therefore at this stage of analysis, the confounding effects of gender and age on the variation of each studied variable were estimated simultaneously with variance components, using multiple regression functions. The implemented likelihood- based technique takes into account families size and structure in the respective parameter. And again, to estimate the contribution of genetic, familial, and environmental factors to LTL variance, we performed pedigree-based variance component (VC) analysis. General (unrestricted) model is compared with the most parsimonious (MP) and each of two corresponding restricted models (RM). Comparison between the MP model and each of the two RMs suggests the significance of age and birth-year effects (LRT=10.94, p=0.001, and LRT=8.18, p=0.004, respectively). The estimated σAD2 suggests that about 67.4% of LTL variation may be explained by an additive genetic component. MP is the most parsimonious model where parameters σHS2 σSB2, β1f, β2f were restricted to zero since household component and sib effects, as well as effects of age and birth-date on telomere length in women,  were non-significant. No significant sibling women were non-significant. No significant sibling cross-correlation was found, while the spouses’ common environment was estimated at 10.7%.). Age and birth year effects in men (β1m and β2m) were substantial (decline in LTL with increased age and birth year).

Convincing evidence exists to suggest that telomere length in humans is highly heritable. Yet, the telomere literature provides conflicting results on the mode of TL inheritance, i.e., is offspring TL more strongly correlated with maternal or paternal TL? (Katarina Nordfja et al., 2005, 2010; Omer T. Njajou et al., 2007; Eisenberg, 2014; De Meyer, Eisenberg, 2015).  In the present study, we investigated TL correlations between parent-child pairs.

    While analyzing the whole population, we observed a highly significant correlation between parents’ and offspring’s LTL, independent of the sex of the parents and the offspring (father–son: r = 0,34, P = 0,0005, n =293; father–daughter: r = 0,28, P = 0,0008, n = 242; mother-son: r = 0,37; P = 0,0005, n = 320; mother–daughter: r = 0,32 P = 0,0006, n=264). No statistically significant differences between the correlation coefficients (ie, r-values) were observed. At the same time, in the group where parents were born in 1923-1928, TL correlation between fathers and offspring was found to be significantly stronger (father-son:  r = 0,54, P=0,0009, n =41; father- daughter: r = 0,60, P=0,001 n = 28), whereas TL correlation between mothers and offspring (mother-son: r = 0,24, P=0,07, n =58; mother–daughter: r = 0,28, P = 0,053, n=47) did not differ significantly from that observed in the whole population. Finally, in a group born after 1928 TL correlations between parents and offspring did not differ significantly from those observed in the entire population (father–son: r = 0,29, P = 0,0008, n =210; father–daughter: r = 0,18, P = 0,014, n = 191; mother-son: r = 0,43; P = 0,0005, n = 224; mother–daughter: r = 0,35 P = 0,0007, n = 194)

Conclusion

Our previous study suggests that famine may result in telomere shortening. This study implies that famine may also affect the mode of TL inheritance.   The results provide evidence that putative genetic factors involved in regulation LTL and environmental factors (Femine) contribute significantly to value of the paternal and maternal correlations.

The Talyshi  Identity Issue

Arakelova V.A., Gaboyan A.H.

Institute of Oriental Studies

Russian-Armenian (Slavonic) University, Yerevan

The Talyshes are the fourth biggest stateless  ethnos of the South Caucasus. There are two groups of Talyshes, living on the both sides of the Araxes river, i.e. in Islamic Republic of Iran and in Azerbaijan Republic. The former group has lived in the Iranian environment, never undergone assimilation policy, having developed its own culture within the common Iranian culture, and thus, being an organic part of Iran with a well-shaped Iranian Talyshi identity. The latter group,  the Talyshes of Azerbaijan Republic, has lived in the dominating Turkic milieu, undergone active assimilation policy, and, as a reult, acquired specific identity elements primarily emphasizing the non-Turkic character of all the identity markers.  Correspondingly, the idea of the Talysh Lebensraum acquires actually opposite approaches among the Talyshes of Iran and  those of Azerbaijan Republic.

The Talyshi (identity) issue emerged and developed as a result of resistance to the state policy of the unification of various ethnic groups’ identities in Azerbaijan Republic, aimed at creation of the common Azerbaijani identity. The purpose of the current paper is to trace the Talyshi issue  through the process of shaping a unified identity in Azerbaijan Republic, in particular: how, on one hand, the identity unification policy, aimed at assimilation of the autochthonous non-Turkic peoples, primarily the Talyshes, հas had a negative impact on the development of the autochthonous cultures, and, on the other hand, how the perception of the Turkic-speakers as “inimical others” finally resulted in the rise and actualization of the Talyshi identity.

On the “Humbaba” Ritual in Central Iran

Taghvayi Elaghe

Institute of Oriental Studies,

Russian-Armenian (Slavonic) University

In the territory of Central Iranian plateau roughly covering historical Media, mostly among the population of the Araq-Natanz-Kashan region, there is a ceremony performed on the 15th day of Ramazan. In the evening, after the eftar, children walk from one house to another with bags and sing specific songs. Below is one of them:

People are supposed to put all kind of sweets, nuts and dried fruits into the bags.

The ritual is called Humbaba, or, in some places, Hurbaba, which defies any etymology.

The second word of this compound is, of course, “baba”, which, in its classical meaning, denotes “Sufi vagrant dervish”; in modern Persian it became a common term for “father”.

As for “hum” or “hur”, its origin remain opaque; hardly any connection with the Mesopotamian deity Humbaba.

The paper is an attempt to introduce the ritual, based on our field records

On A Kinship Term in Yaghnobi

Tavakoli Azam

Independent Researcher, Isfahan

The paper focuses on the analysis of an interesting kinship term in the Yaghnobi language−binanj, which belongs to the sphere of polygamy and literary means “concubin” or “another wife”.

The origin of the word is transparent: it derives from an Old Iranian proto-form literary meaning “co-wife”.  It comes from a Sogdian antecedent and has parallels in New Persian vasni, havu , etc.

The paper discussed the current social aspect of this term among

Genetic Atlas Of Historical Armenia

Perpetuation of an objective information on the origin and long-millennia residence of Armenians on the whole stretch of the Armenian Highland is, in fact, contingent on the creation of a comprehensive, scientifically sound and internationally recognized "genetic memorial" of one of the few indigenous peoples of Southwest Asia.

We embarked on the mission to draw a genetic atlas of historical Armenia to reproduce the rich spatial mosaic of the Armenian gene pool, having originated and flourished during several millennia in the expanse of the Armenian Highland. Constructing such an atlas will lend itself to the solution of a number of fundamental questions on the origins of Armenians, answers to which cannot be obtained within the framework of the classical disciplines of Armenology – history, archaeology, and linguistics.

The genetic atlas of historical Armenia will have a number of practical applications. First and foremost, it will serve as an invaluable resource for historians, archaeologists, and linguists exploring the issues of the origin of Armenians, Armenian culture, and the Armenian language. As a whole, it will serve as a scientifically documented evidence of Armenians' presence throughout the Armenian Highland for several millennia.

The urgency of the matter should be considered against the geo-political realities of the region. Today, anthropological genetics is increasingly turning to the study of ancient DNA extracted from human burials of various epochs, including from the area of Western Armenia. Creation of the genetic atlas of historical Armenia will effectively prevent any misrepresentation of the genetic (and in some cases ethnic) identity of the unearthed remains. We aim to collect scientifically significant volume of evidence to further support our recent findings that the Neolithic population of Eastern Armenia was, in fact, the direct genetic ancestors of Armenians, who inhabited the region during several millennia.

The main criterion for the selection of donors for this project is the compulsory origin of all their ancestors,
i.e. both via paternal and maternal lines, from the same region of historical Armenia. It is clear that with each subsequent generation the number of Armenians that meet this requirement significantly reduces. Therefore, the collection of this material should be carried out as soon as possible.

The main difficulty that we faces is that, within the borders of the Republic of Armenia, there are practically no descendants of Armenians from the western regions of historical Armenia with ancestors originating from the same geographical area. Therefore, the collection of DNA samples must also be carried out in the Diaspora communities of Armenians, including in Russia, Iran, the Middle East, the Americas, and Western Europe.

The comprehensive information obtained through the analysis of DNA samples will eventually be used to solve the said fundamental and applied problems. Most importantly, it will allow the establishment of a national gene bank, which will be used by subsequent generations of researchers to study the specific features of the Armenian gene pool.

The presentation will deal with a case study of a Bronze Age skeleton from Norabak site (kurgan 1) at Southeast Armenia, showing a progressive form of seronegative spondyloarthropathy (SNS) with a combination of traits diagnostic of ankylosing spondylitis (AS). The skeleton belonged to an elderly male and was the earliest inhumation within the Kurgan (1400-1200 BCE). The case was first described by R. Mkrtchyan and H. Simonyan (2013) and differential diagnosis (DD) is presented in a recent publication by the authors of this presentation (Karapetian et al., 2019).

Though, AS is mentioned in various paleopathological literature, reliable reports are scarce, because of an earlier confusion between ankylosing spondylitis, DISH and spondylosis deformans. Moreover, detailed DD is not always presented, some researchers diagnosing AS in any case of spine fusion and not taking into account existence of other forms of SNS. Several authors expressed the idea that antiquity of AS might be of recent origin (Rogers et al., 1985; Saleem, Hawass, 2014). Arriaza (1993) proposed that SNS might be a recent phenomenon associated with nucleation and sedentary lifestyle.

AS shows significant association with B*27 type of human leukocyte antigen complex. Also, there is some interrelation between inflammatory bowel diseases, such as Crohn’s disease, and AS; as well as between AS and genetic markers of familiar Mediterranean fever – the disease showing highest frequencies in modern Mediterranean populations, Arabs, Armenians and some other groups. New evidences of AS in ancient skeletal remains from regions with modern records of the disease may be of interest.

The Norabak skeleton presents the earliest described case of the disease from the territory of Armenia, and one of the earliest reported cases of AS with reliable DD. The case shows that the disease was present on Armenian territory as early as the 2nd millennium BC.

This work presents the results of paleoanthropological research using the method of computed tomography of the ancient Egyptian mummy, stored in the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts (inventory number №5301). According to the inventory, this is a mummy of Khor-ha, which dates from the VII-IV centuries BC. Over the mummy of Khor-kha lies a grid of blue faience beads, characteristic of the Late period of Egyptian history. For magnetic resonance scanning, Siemens Magnetom Verio magnetic field strength 3 Tesla magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was used. X-ray computed tomography of mummies was performed on a positron emission computed tomography (PET-CT) Biograph mCT40 by Siemens. Further, measurements of the skeleton were made on the frames. The gender of individual being studied is determined as female by a number of morphological characteristics of the pelvis and cranium. The biological age at the time of her death is defined as 20-25 years according to such characteristics as the overgrowth of the seams on the cranium, odontological indicators and signs on the bones of the postcranial skeleton including pelvic bones. The description of the craniological characteristics clearly demonstrates the belonging of the mummy to the Mediterranean anthropological type. Exactly this type is characterized by dolichocrania and mesocrania, grace, narrow face part, a sharp horizontal profiling and a relatively high and narrow nose.

The observables of the postcranial skeleton indicate a growth below the average - 157.9 cm, a narrow pelvis, a small width of the brachii, an elongated brachii relative to the femur and a significantly shortened antebrachium. The skeleton of the upper limbs can be characterized as gracile with the development of a certain muscular relief associated with a relatively intense bending of the arm in the elbow joint and its pronation. At the same time the bones of the lower limbs are quite massive and strong with the well-expressed muscular relief on them.

Systematic archaeological excavations conducted for more than a century in the northern part of the Armenian Highlands, in the territories which were under the rule of Uduri-Etiuni union, allows us to supplement the information from the available Urartian cuneiform sources with significant archaeological and paleoanthropological data from the cemeteries of Mrtbi-dzor, Hatsarat, Noratus, Kanagegh, Geghovit, Akunk and Norabak.

The cuneiform inscriptions of the Urartian kings (Sarduri II, Rusa I) document the names of the so called “kingdoms”(contries) included in the Uduri-Etiuni union (Velikukhi, Arkukini, Tulikhu). The location of the investigated archaeological sites where the presented craniological materials originate from territorially correspond with these political entities.  Mrtbi-dzor, Hatsarat, Kanagegh and Noratus are situated in the territory of the "kingdom" of Velikukhi. Akunk and Norabak are located in Arkukini, while, Nerkin Getashen and Geghovit are in Tulikhu.

The aim of this research is to present the method of multivariate canonical analysis based on individual data. The compiled dataset will be used to investigate the craniological materials of the Iron Age from the territories of the southwestern coast of Lake Sevan for the possible identification of ethnic groups. 13 main metric parameters of the cerebral and facial parts of the skull have been selected as comparative features.

By canonical analysis, it was possible to distinguish 3 ethnic groups within the Uduri-Etiuni population which correspond with the territorial units of the "kingdoms" of Velikukhi, Arkukini and Tulikhu.

Zmeysky burial ground - Alan soil burial ground of X-XIV centuries on the southeastern outskirts of the village of Zmeyskaya (Kirovsky district, North Ossetia-Alania) is an urban necropolis associated with the settlement of Verkhny Dzhulat, located on its northeast periphery. In 2013-2014, as part of security and rescue operations in the reconstruction zone of the federal highway M-29, large-scale archaeological research was conducted (headed by M. Bakushev). During the investigation, more than 600 burials were studied. As part of this study, materials from catacomb 62 (III) are considered.

The catacomb was found in areas НО / 161 - 163, in the slope of the roadside. The burial structure was arranged in mainland clay, consisted of a dromos and a burial chamber. Two people were buried in the cell: man 45-55 years old and child 1-7 years old. Both skeletons were preserved in situ with slight displacements. Bone integrity is poor.

At present, paleoanthropological materials related to skeleton 1 are of the greatest interest. Skeleton 1 was located at the eastern wall, extended on its back along the north-south line, with a skull to the south. The skull lay on the parietal region, with a small blockage to the right, with the front part to the southeast, base up. The facial skeleton is destroyed. Judging by the small fragments, initially the skull lay on the occipital region, face up. The lower jaw lay on the cervical vertebrae. Both arms are extended along the skeleton. The bones of the legs are extended along the chamber, feet apart. In the accumulation of fragments of the skull, on the right side, 2 lower incisors with traces of gilding are recorded, which are the subject of this study.

The poor preservation of bone material does not allow us to speak with confidence about the anthropological features of this individual, however, judging by the surviving fragments, the skull most likely does not stand out from the general sample and is characterized by a Caucasoid craniological complex. Accompanying clothing material also corresponds to complexes from other burials. The uniqueness of this burial lies in the presence of 2 gilded incisors (the absence of other teeth due to poor preservation of the material does not allow us to talk about the presence of gilding on the remaining teeth), analogues of which are not known.

Within the framework of the RFBR project (17-29-04329 ofi-m), a comprehensive study of incisors with gilding was carried out at the Research Center “Kurchatov Institute”. The method of scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis carried out a layer-by-layer analysis of gilding, which showed the absence of mercury, thus the amalgam gilding of teeth was excluded from further consideration. The method of gas chromatography with mass spectrometry was used to identify the possible organic compounds of the binder material could use to apply the gold coating on the teeth. The traces of linseed or hemp oils, animal fat, as well as some hydrocarbon compounds were detected in the mixture. So, it was suggested that gold leaf gilding technology was used to cover the teeth. The elemental composition of gold was determined by ICP-MS.
