Revolution(s) in Eurasia - Harvard Davis Center Fully Funded Fellowships 2017-2018

Publish Date: Nov 24, 2016

Deadline: Jan 10, 2017

The Harvard Davis Center provides support for scholars who wish to pursue individual research projects while enjoying a collegial atmosphere for scholarly exchange and discussion. Each academic year, we offer a small number of funded research fellowships.

The Davis Center's Fellows Program brings together scholars at early and later stages in their careers to consider a common theme spanning the social sciences and humanities. Each year, a team of faculty affiliates coordinates this theme and leads a regular interdisciplinary seminar series in which Fellows participate in addition to pursuing their own research.

The application period for 2017–2018 fellowships runs from October 14, 2016–January 10, 2017. The Fellows Program Committee is interested in applications from scholars currently working on the  2017–2018 theme, "Revolution(s) in Eurasia," or equally, those working on unrelated themes, but who are interested in exploring the theme. (Note that scholars whose work does not address the selected theme are encouraged to apply for fellowships at the Davis Center, and their applications will receive full consideration.)

Theme

Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, the world historical importance of the Russian revolution has faded from scholarly and public consciousness. Yet this seminal event of the twentieth century had, and arguably continues to have, a deep and enduring effect on a variety of global and national histories through its contending narrative understandings, social representations, and political appropriations.

In synchronicity with the centennial of this revolution, the theme for the 2017–2018 Fellows Program is “Revolution(s) in Eurasia.” The Davis Center encourages prospective fellows to interpret the theme broadly and welcomes all applications.

We are particularly interested in focusing attention on the global dimensions of the Russian revolution, provoking an examination of the revolution’s broad historical effects, both directly and indirectly. Beyond 1917 and the Russian Empire, we hope to trace the broader implications of the revolution experience in this region on politics and ideology, notions of women and gender, rationalism and religiosity, and perhaps empire itself. The implications for understanding various contemporary revolutionary ideas and movements around the world will also be explored.

Any scholar whose research touches on the work of the Davis Center community is welcome to apply for to the Fellows Program. We invite applicants to consider some of the ways in which their work speaks to these thematic elements.

In October 2017, the Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies at Harvard University and the European University at St. Petersburg will host a two day symposium on the global dimensions and historical effects of the Russian revolution. Fellows will be encouraged to attend.

The Center will award Postdoctoral Fellowships within the framework of the 2017–2018 Fellows Program.
