Fellowships at The Met are an opportunity for a community of scholars from around the world to use the Museum as a place for exchange, research, and professional advancement.
The Research Scholar in Photograph Conservation works on-site in the photograph conservation lab of the Sherman Fairchild Center for Works on Paper and Photograph Conservation. The Research Scholar is fully integrated into the community of art history and conservation fellows and takes part in research sharing and workshops that explore the inner workings of The Met.
Fellowship Period
The Research Scholar's term follows the academic calendar, with the successful candidate beginning in September. The scholar may apply during the second year of his or her tenure for an extension to a third year.
Eligibility
The Research Scholar is expected to have a graduate degree in conservation or equivalent experience and should be completely committed to the conservation of photographs as his or her area of specialization.
Projects
The Research Scholar conducts independent research related to issues of historic and contemporary processes, preservation, analysis, or treatment of photographs, and participates in the collection- and exhibition-related activities of the Photograph Conservation lab.
Recent issues the Department of Photographs has been considering for research include: characterization of photographs in The Diane Arbus Archive; the refinement of housing designs for low-temperature storage; a technical and historical investigation of E. J. Bellocq's working methods; the development of content for online publication; and the identification of coatings used on photographs.
Funding
The stipend amount is $52,000 per year, with up to an additional $6,000 for travel (maximum of six weeks).

1. Documents as Microsoft Word or PDF files:
- Full curriculum vitae of education, professional experience, honors, awards, and publications
- Project proposal including:
- A statement, not to exceed one thousand words, describing what you expect to accomplish during the fellowship period and how you will utilize the Museum's resources and collection to achieve your objectives
- Tentative schedule of work to be accomplished during the fellowship period and proposed starting and ending dates
2. Contact information for three recommenders (at least one academic and one professional), none of whom may be current Metropolitan Museum of Art staff. Once you have submitted your recommenders' names, titles, and email addresses, they will automatically be emailed instructions for uploading their letters online. Please note that each letter must include the recommender's complete title and contact information. We encourage recommenders to submit letters in English.
The deadline for all application materials, including transcripts and letters of recommendation, is December 1, 2017, 5 pm (ET).
