Job Description

This Post Doc is expected to contribute towards a better understanding of the conditions for, and evolution of, states-in-development in the context of broad geopolitical changes occurring since the turn of the Millennium. These have sparked renewed scholarly interest in the role of the state in development and poverty reduction. The neo-liberal ideology of “rolling back the state” has been challenged by a variety of “developmentalist” projects, but we also find a number of processes of state fragmentation and weakening of state capacity for governance. The Post doc should contribute to the understanding of the forms of state power and modes of governance that are emerging.

The project should fall under one (or several) of the following three broad headlines:

  1. State formation and statehood. This includes a focus on the historical dynamics of state emergence; state legitimacy: and/or state sovereignty and interactions with, and influence of, external powers.
  2. State scope, capacity and resilience. This includes a focus on the politics of poverty, the relations between business and the state, as well as the conditions for so called “state failure”.
  3. The state and natural resources. This includes a focus on the importance for state building of the control over natural resources, and/or a better understanding of the role of the state in a green transformation.

The applicant must demonstrate knowledge, a publication record and teaching experience grounded in research on global governance as emphasised above. Applicants are expected to prepare a project proposal.

The main objective of appointment to the position of post-doctoral fellow is to qualify researchers for work in top academic positions within their respective area of study.
