The Department of Information and Communication Technologies at Universitat Pompeu Fabra seeks doctoral applications from talented students with a strong interest in research. Candidates for PhD positions must hold an M.Sc degree or equivalent.

DTIC Research Positions 2016-2017

These fellowships are considered as Predoctoral Research Contracts (PRC), due to the approval of the Spanish law 14/2011 on Science, Technology and Innovation.

Applications are invited for the DTIC fellowships, which are targeted at exceptional predoctoral researchers in the DTIC's research areas. The fellowship provides a recognized first step into a research career.

We highly encourage that, before applying, each candidate identifies one or several DTIC research supervisor with whom he/she would like to work and contact them. Support from a potential research supervisor is very important during the fellowship selection process (and to get admitted to the PhD program, too).

Research Areas

Students will pursue doctoral studies in one of the Research Areas of the department which include Cognition, Computation and Robotics, Artificial Intelligence and Theoretical Computer Science, Natural Language Processing, Ubiquitous Computing, Information Retrieval and Data Mining, Cognitive Multimedia Technologies, Image Processing and Computer Vision, Image Processing for Enhanced Cinematography, Sound and Music Computing, Human-Computer Interaction, Graphics and Educational Technologies, Network Technologies and Strategies, Wireless Communications, Information Theory and Coding, Computational Neuroscience, Instrumentation and Biomedical Electronics, Computational Imaging and Computational Physiology, Analysis of Biomedical Data and Non-Linear Signal Analysis.

First PhD application period: November 30th, 2015 to January, 15th, 2016         Resolution 25/02/2016

Second PhD application period: January, 16th, 2016 to March, 4th, 2016           Resolution 21/04/2016 

Third PhD application period: March, 5th, 2016 to April, 22th, 2016                   Resolution 02/06/2016 

Fourth PhD application period: April 23rd, 2016 to June, 10th, 2016                  Resolution 20/07/2016

Duration of the fellowship (PRC)

Maximum four years, renewed yearly.

Eligibility

Candidates must have submitted a PhD application. Only candidates accepted to the PhD program are eligible a fellowship (PRC). Hence, every fellowship application should be paired up with an admissions application into the PhD program. Admissions to the PhD program are handled by the University Admission Office.

Types of fellowship (PRC):

There are 3 possible types of predoctoral contracts with established minimum gross monthly salary of 986,76€. This amount can vary according to the research group:
 
TEACHING : 1) including 60 teaching hours/academic year*. Fellowship fully paid by departament
 
                    2) including 40 teaching hours /academic year* and research tasks. Fellowship funded between department and research group
 
RESEARCH: 3) includes only research tasks and is funded ONLY by  research group.
 
Non-EU students will have a reduction of 24,75% the three first months (till December, if the contract starts in October). The corresponding taxes will be deducted from January when the new fiscal year starts.
 
* Teaching hours will be carried out at UPF undergraduate engineering degrees according to the PhD student background. A knowledge of Spanish or Catalan will be required after the first year of fellowships for those teaching in 1st or 2nd year. 

Fees covered by the fellowship (PRC)

Both types of fellowships/PRC include the annual tutorship fees, but not the administrative fees neither the fees for validations of degrees issued by a university outside the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) without homologation. The year salary gets an increase of 6% during the 3rd year and 20% during the 4th year.
