The Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology

The University of Queensland's Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (AIBN) is an integrated multi-disciplinary research institute bringing together the skills of world-class researchers working at the intersection of biology, chemistry, engineering and computer modelling. The institute has more than 450 researchers housed in a $AU75 million state-of-the-art building complimented by an extensive suite of facilities. This critical mass of researchers is working to develop new products and processes which will significantly impact human health, the environment, and the development of sustainable renewable energy. AIBN goes beyond basic research to promote and develop the growth of innovative industries, which will benefit the Queensland and Australian economies.

Within the AIBN, Professor Michael J. Monteiro leads a research group focused on the synthesis of new polymers and polymer nanostructures for drug and vaccine delivery, high strength coatings, membranes, stem cell scaffolds. The Monteiro group is seeking high-quality chemistry graduates with either Honours (1st or 2A Class) or a Masters equivalent to commence a PhD in the above areas. The applicant must have a very good undergraduate record in Chemistry.

The role

The research team is funded through the ARC, NCED and UQ.  The successful candidates will receive systematic training in Polymer and Organic Chemistry, including the synthesis and state-of-the-art characterization techniques. The candidate will be housed in an excellent research environment with the latest laboratory facilities and polymer characterization equipment.

The person

A PhD is about learning new skills, how to do research, and becoming an independent researcher. We recognise that students will come to us from different backgrounds in order to learn these new skills and we welcome interest from domestic (i.e. Australian and New Zealand) students.

The candidate will have a 1st Class Honours degree or equivalent in science and should be eligible for an Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) or equivalent (for more information, please visit:http://www.uq.edu.au/grad-school/domestic-student-scholarships). Background in chemistry or chemical engineering is desirable.

Mandatory requirements for international applicants:

1. At least 2 high quality research publications;

2. Excellent academic performance evidenced by a high Grade Point Average (GPA); and

3. International applicants must meet the University of Queensland's English Language Proficiency (ELP) requirements, detailed at http://www.uq.edu.au/grad-school/english-language-proficiency-requirements

Remuneration

The base stipend will be at the rate of AUD $25,849 per annum (2015 rate) tax-free for three years with the possibility of a six month extension in approved circumstances.
