PhD Scholarship in Drinking Water Treatment Optimisation
The Project: The overall aim of this ARC Linkage project is to develop a number of data-driven predictive models, predominantly based on remotely collected sensors data, to achieve enhanced proactivity of drinking water treatment processes and monetary savings for water utilities. A specific focus is on improving the reliability and the predictive capacity of the Vertical Profiling System's probes, deployed in several Australian reservoirs. This project is in partnership with Seqwater, Melbourne Water, Xylem Analytics Australia (industry partners), Griffith University, University of South Australia, and National University of Singapore (academic partners).
The Role: The successful appointee will be focusing on the fluorescent dissolved organic matter (fDOM) probe and investigating its potential to be used to optimise the coagulation process of drinking water treatment plants. Conducting laboratory experiments (data collection), data analysis and developing a predictive model to be deployed in real-time in drinking water treatment plants.
Eligibility
This scholarship is available to both domestic and international research degree students.
Applicants should possess a Bachelors (Honours class I or IIa) or Masters Degree (with Research) in an environmental science/engineering or other relevant discipline.
The successful candidate must be willing to travel occasionally interstate and potentially internationally. Previous work in the drinking water treatment, insitu water quality analyses, or water quality and treatment modelling is desirable but not required.
Applicants will be considered provided they fulfill the criteria for PhD admission and scholarship of the University of South Australia and demonstrate excellent research capacity.
Value
The scholarship will provide a living allowance paid at the RTP Domestic Stipend rate: $26,682/annum (2017 date).
A tuition fee waiver scholarship may be available to a successful overseas applicant.
The duration of the scholarship is 3 years.
