About PhD Positions

We are seeking up to 11 PhD students:

  • 3 general PhD positions in Business Studies, financed with doctoral studentships (PhD employment)

  • up to 8 PhD positions in Business Studies, financed with a combination of different funding, related to the following projects:

Project No. 1: “Accounting and the brain”
Knowledge about the brain is becoming increasingly important for the understanding of how information systems interact with humans to affect economic decision-making. Our international research group combines traditional research methods with neuroscientific methods to experimentally test how accounting information interacts with the brain. We seek one or two PhD candidates with a background in accounting, economics and/or psychology, who are eager to explore how neuropsychology can inform accounting research. Knowledge of statistics and experimental research is qualifying.
Number of positions: 1-2
Funding: External funding for four years (PhD employment).

Note: This position is subject to availability of external funding.

Project No. 2: “The role and contribution of business partners in international multi-sectorial partnerships addressing AMR”
In the face of both increasing anti-microbial resistance (AMR) and a precipitous decline in the number of active antibacterial drug development programs among pharmaceutical companies, a number of “international multi-sectorial partnerships” (IMSPs) have been founded to address this global threat. These partnerships consist of actors ranging from business and government to academia and civil society. In this PhD project, the different roles that business partners play in IMSPs will be studied. The project is expected to shed much needed light on influential factors (i.e., what influences success and failure) to value creation in IMSPs to fight AMR.
Number of positions: 1
Funding: External funding for three years (PhD employment)., the (fourth) last year with a doctoral studentship (PhD employment).

Note: This position is subject to availability of external funding.

Project No. 3: “The involvement of MNCs in social innovation projects: Exploring the liability of newness”
Extant research on the configuration of R&D activities in MNCS has shown that, although there is an increasing internationalization of R&D activities and that the MNC consists of a globally dispersed network of R&D units, much of the core R&D activities stay ‘at home’, that is at the HQ. Research shows that R&D resources that emerge at the subsidiary level are still very under-utilized. Based on this, research suggests that subsidiaries themselves should take an entrepreneurial stance and create so called subsidiary initiatives to get recognition and leverage of their R&D capabilities. Since most research has been occupied with the study of how these initiatives emerge this project intends to contribute with an understanding of the underlying conditions behind HQ acceptance or rejection of subsidiary R&D initiatives. Knowledge in quantitative methods is an advantage.
Number of positions: 1
Funding: Scholarship for three years, the (fourth) last year with a doctoral studentship (PhD employment).

Project No. 4: “Migration and Integration: Highly qualified migrants’ cultural integration in Swedish global firms”
In the wake of international migration, highly skilled individuals find new work opportunities across borders. Historical facts indicate that some countries, such as Sweden have benefitted in a pivotal way from earlier migrants' knowledge, skills and ideas. But what about today? Are highly skilled migrants integrated (especially with respect to cultural integration) in a way that makes them experience work satisfaction, feel committed to the firm, and enables them to do their best? This project’s significance lies in the ambition to provide a deeper understanding of the problems and solutions involved in integration (especially cultural integration) of highly skilled migrants into Swedish global firms.
Integration will be studied at the individual, organizational and societal level. At the individual level, from the skilled migrants' point of view, the aim is to identify, describe and analyze ways to realize their potential and the role played by cultural integration in Swedish global firms. Questions will include individuals’ original motivation for migration, coping strategies, and learning strategies. At the organizational level the organizational culture, core values, and diversity climate will be in focus in the attempt to identify in what way, if any, firms can contribute to highly skilled migrants’ (cultural) integration in Swedish MNCs. The study will also address whether societal level migration policies and practices, and societal values contribute to easing highly skilled migrants’ integration into Swedish firms. Overall the project is expected to generate both theoretical insights and practical implications of value to both scholars and practitioners.
This project is part of a larger international comparative research endeavor involving ten other countries, carrying out a multimethod data collection in Swedish firms. Knowledge of qualitative and/or quantitative methods is an advantage.
Number of positions: 1
Funding: Scholarship for four years.

Project No. 5: “Keeping status quo or seeking innovation: Can MNC headquarters provide attention to novel information?”
Existing research in international business has shown that headquarters of multinational corporations (MNCs) provide greater attention to subsidiaries that they consider as strategically important for the entire organisation or that occupy a central position in the organisational network. In addition, research has shown that MNC headquarters’ attention and decision-making is often biased by their existing knowledge and experience. This suggests that headquarters’ attention patterns are stuck in what is already known by them thus preventing them to recognize novel business ideas, especially when coming from less central subsidiaries. These subsidiaries are often a source of business opportunities that drive innovation and lead to business development of the entire organisation. Hence, our research aims to contribute to existing international business and global strategy literature by: 1) examining additional factors that may determine the attention patterns of headquarters and 2) identifying enabling factors that allow MNC headquarters to move away from their biases in order to respond to novel business ideas from subsidiaries in the periphery of the organisation. We plan to collect the data in two stages: in the first stage, qualitative data will be mainly collected through interviews and ethnography, while in the second stage, quantitative data (through a survey) will be collected to test existing research and insights gained from the qualitative data collected in the first stage.
Number of positions: 1
Funding: External funding for three years (PhD employment), the (fourth) last year with a doctoral studentship (PhD employment).

Note: This position is subject to availability of external funding.

Projekt No. 6: Digitalization and management of innovation”
Digitalization is affecting business organizations in numerous ways, including its innovation activities. Rapid developments in software technology, automation, modelling techniques and computing capacity provide new modelling and simulation tools used in systems engineering and new product development. The purpose of the project is to study how MBSE affect engineering work and organization. More specifically the effects on the processes and outcomes of the search for solutions in problem-solving activities will be investigated. The candidate will work in a small group comprising senior researchers conducting similar research.
We are seeking one PhD candidate to conduct a comparative case study of the use of Model Based System Engineering (MBSE) methods in development projects in industrial firms providing complex products and systems.
Number of positions: 1
Funding: External funding (PhD employment) for four years.

Note: This position is subject to availability of external funding.

Projekt No. 7: Research School in Accounting (FIRE)
The research school in accounting (FIRE) is a joint collaboration between Stockholm School of Economics, Stockholm Business School, the School of Business, Economics and Law at the University of Gothenburg and Uppsala University. The school is focusing on the areas financial accounting, financial management and management control facilitating PhD research of high international standard. The Ph.D.-students of the school meet regularly in seminars to discuss their research projects together with faculty. Several courses, having internationally recognized faculty, are also offered by the school.
Number of positions: 1
Funding: Scholarship for three years, the (fourth) last year with a doctoral studentship (PhD employment).

Note: This position is subject to availability of external funding.

The PhD Programme in Business Studies

Do you want to continue working with questions from your master thesis? Do you enjoy getting to the bottom of complex issues? Do you want to generate new knowledge to researchers and practitioners? Do you like to write? Do you want a real challenge? Then the PhD programme in business studies might suit you.

What are the career prospects? Research at the Department focuses on international business, marketing, accounting & finance, management & organisation, and entrepreneurship. The PhD program aims to provide excellent scholarly training. PhDs hold positions as researchers and academics in Sweden and abroad at various universities and business schools. There are also opportunities to work outside of academia. In recent years, graduates from the PhD programme have been offered positions in the business Community and with various NGOs, the media and authorities.

What does the PhD program look like? Work toward a doctorate is expected to take four years of full-time study, which consists of courses (90 ECTS) and thesis work (150 ECTS). Admitted students are provided with funding. Some funding is also given for travel and other expenses. PhD students often participate in broader research projects carried out by teams of researchers in the department.

The doctoral student and his/her supervisors (two senior researchers) set up an individual study plan outlining how the research will be conducted and which courses are appropriate. The Faculty Board monitors and Reviews the individual study plan once a year.

Many doctoral students spend time (2-4 months) at a foreign university. In past years, our doctoral students have visited leading institutions such as the London School of Economics, and Harvard University in the US.

During the first semester the doctoral students follow an introductory (compulsory) course programme called SUBS. The programme is a joint effort between Stockholm School of Economics, Uppsala University and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU).

The programme structure

The curriculum
comprises 240 ECTS credits (90 of which are for courses and 150 of which are fulfilled with the PhD thesis), which corresponds to four years of full-time study.

Research Seminar/Högre seminarium
doctoral students are expected to present their work (thesis manuscript) at least once a year at the weekly research seminar (Högre seminariet) at the department. Doctoral students are part of one of the five research areas in the department (international business, marketing, accounting & finance, management & organisation and entrepreneurship). Each area (sector) has an agenda and meetings are held at least every two weeks.

Courses
the curriculum includes courses on research methods and courses specialising in the primary business studies fields. Some of these courses are compulsory for all doctoral students. Courses may also be taken at other departments or universities. New doctoral students take part in the SUBS-programme which is comprised of four courses (7.5 credits each) concentrated to the first semester (autumn).

The doctoral thesis
is the core of the PhD programme. In the thesis, doctoral students apply scientific methodology to a research problem in business studies aiming at the advancement of research in the field. The quality of the thesis should reach the level required for publication in a scientific journal. At the public defence, the thesis is scrutinized by an external examiner from another university (national or international).

Funding
takes the form of a scholarship or a doctoral studentship (doktorandtjänst). The doctoral studentship is associated with the possibility of teaching or working as a senior researcher assistent for 20 % of the time. There is no tuition fee.

Office Space
doctoral students are allotted a shared office at the department.
