Ph.D. position in Materials Theory, Sweden

Publish Date: Jul 18, 2016

Deadline: Jul 22, 2016

About the university

Uppsala University is an international research university focused on the development of science and education. Our most important assets are all the individuals who with their curiosity and their dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting work places. Uppsala University has 40,000 students, 7,000 employees and a turnover of SEK 6,5 billion.

Project description

We are looking for a highly motivated and ambitious Ph.D. student to work on the development and application of first-principles theory to study charge transfer dynamics in photocatalytic processes on the surfaces of functional 2D and 3D materials, a typical example being photo-induced water splitting. Ab initio molecular dynamics simulations within adiabatic approximation will be performed for the structural properties of the adsorbates on the substrates followed by non-adiabatic molecular dynamics simulations through the coupling of electronic and ionic degrees of freedom. Moreover, excited state properties will be studied by time-dependent density functional theory. The project involves large scale computations in high performance supercomputing facilities as well as development of numerical codes. Collaboration with other theoretical and experimental groups is highly anticipated.

Research environment

The division of Materials theory at Uppsala University offers a world-class environment for materials theory research, with interests spanning from strongly correlated to atomistic spin simulations and first-principles calculations of a very broad range of functional materials. The division currently consists of approximately 90 researchers, of which about half are Ph.D. students. The work will be carried out in the group of Assoc. Prof. Biplab Sanyal in close collaboration with Prof. Susanne Mirbt.

Employment

Starting date for the position is September 2016, or on a date mutually agreed upon. A Ph.D. position is a full-time four-year appointment.

Application

The applicant should have a Master’s degree in physics, or equivalent, with a strong background in condensed matter or solid state physics. Prior experience in ab-initio calculations is a clear advantage. Fluency in both written and spoken English is a prerequisite. The application should include a personal letter carefully explaining scientific interests and motivation for pursuing a Ph.D. degree, CV, and a verified list of course grades. If available, a Master’s thesis (finished or in draft form) can be included. Two letters of recommendation should be included in the application.

Uppsala University aims for gender balance and diversity in all activities in order to achieve a higher quality at all levels of the organization. We therefore welcome applicants of any gender and with different birth background, functionality and life experience. Within this category a majority of the employed are men, and we would therefore particularly like to see female applicants for employment.
