PhD Scholarship in Computational Physics

The Quantum Biology and Computational Physics Group and the Department of Physics, Chemistry and Pharmacy at the University of Southern Denmark in Odense invite applications for a PhD position. We expect the position to be filled in the area of computational biophysics, quantum chemistry, computational physics or complex molecular modelling.

We are looking for an outstanding and competitive candidate with a clear potential to excel in theoretical and computational physics.

The project deals with development and utilization of the reactive force field to quantitatively describe interactions between ionizing radiation with biological medium. This development will root upon the molecular mechanics approach, but will account for random, rapid, local, quantum transformations of the molecular system caused by its irradiation. The consideration will be made for irradiations with charged particles and photons (X-rays), and applied for the investigation of the irradiation driven modifications of biomolecular systems.

The successful candidate is required to have a bachelor degree in physics, or a similar programme, and be familiar with the concepts of scientific computing. Prior experience with computational quantum chemistry, classical molecular dynamics or parallel computing is considered as a requirement. The candidate should be able to work in a collaborative environment and have strong written and verbal communication skills.

The appointment will be for a term of three (5+3 programme for applicants with a Master's degree) or four (4+4 programme for students who have not yet finished their Master studies) years at very competitive salary and it is expected to start as soon as possible and no later than September 2016. Prospective candidates are required to include in the application at least two letters of recommendation. Application deadline: 8 July 2016.

For further information about the project please contact Associate Professor Ilia Solov’yov (ilia@sdu.dk; +45-6550-2532).

Application, salary etc.

Appointment as a PhD Research Fellow is for three years. Employment stops automatically at the end of the period. The holder of the scholarship is not allowed to have other paid employment during the three-year period.

The successful applicant will be employed in accordance with the agreement of 10 November 2015 on salaried PhD scholars between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations).

The successful candidate will be enrolled at this university in accordance with faculty regulations and the Danish Ministerial Order on the PhD Programme at the Universities (PhD order).

The university encourages all persons interested in the position to apply, regardless of their age, gender, religious affiliation or ethnic background.

Application must be made in the form of a Declaration of Interest including the following:

• A research proposal/description of your approach to the above project (max one page excluding references)
• A letter stating your specific interest, motivation and qualifications for the project in question (max. two pages)
• Detailed CV, including personal contact information
• Copies of diplomas, Bachelor as well as Master’s degree, including transcript of notes/grades
• At least two signed reference letters. Should your referees wish to send their letters directly to us, please have them use e-mail: anc@sdu.dk mentioning your name and the title of the position in the subject line. And please note that these also need to reach us before deadline.
