International Poetry Competition

The Oxford Brookes Poetry Centre is delighted to launch its 2017 International Poetry Competition to celebrate the power of poetry across the world!

The competition is open to both new and established poets aged 18 and over from across the globe and has two categories:

  • Open category (open to all poets aged 18 years and over)
  • English as an Additional Language (EAL) category (open to all poets aged 18 and over who write in English as an Additional Language

The winners of each category will receive £1000 and both runners up £200.

We are very excited to announce that this year’s judge is the much celebrated and award-winning poet Helen Mort.

Helen’s first poetry collection Division Street, published in 2013, won the prestigious Fenton Aldeburgh Prize. In 2014, she was named as one of the Poetry Book Society’s Next Generation poets, a list that appears only every decade. Her latest collection, No Map Could Show Them (Chatto & Windus), is a Poetry Book Society Recommendation, whilst her first novel, Black Car Burning, is forthcoming. In 2017, she was a judge for the Man Booker International Prize. Helen was a Douglas Caster Cultural Fellow at The University of Leeds from 2014-2016 and now lectures at The Manchester Writing School.

The competition deadline is midnight on 28 August 2017. It costs £5 to submit one poem or £4 per poem for more than three entries. Entrants may submit a maximum of ten poems, following the instructions in the Oxford Brookes Shop. All entries must be unpublished work.
