NATIONAL FOLK FELLOWSHIP

Applications for the 2017 Fellowship have now closed. We expect them to reopen on 21 March 2017. For folk musicians, singers, dancers, poets, performance artists, collector-performers. 

The annual National Folk Fellowship is offered jointly by the National Library of Australia and the National Folk Festival. The National Library holds the most significant folklore and related collections in Australia. The Fellowship offers a unique opportunity for the recipient to discover and explore original collected material at the Library for use in their own artistic work. The outcome of this residency at the National Library will result in a performance at the 2017 National Folk Festival, and recordings acquired from the National Library’s Oral History and Folklore collection.

Fellows receive:

  • Special access to research facilities and collections
  • Access to the Library’s professional sound recording studios
  • $4000 for travel support, accommodation and project expenses for a residency at the Library of four weeks, or equivalent
  • $4000 to present performances of, and a presentation on the collected material at the 2016 National Folk Festival and a subsequent presentation on the Fellowship at the National Library.

Who can apply?

The National Folk Fellowship is open to established and emerging folk practitioners: musicians, singers, dancers, poets, performance artists, collector/performers.

You must be able to demonstrate:

  • a level of artistry required for a featured performance at the National Folk Festival
  • an effective project concept and plan that uses original source materials in developing the performance
  • the ability to undertake research in the National Library’s collections
