Nagaoka University of Technology (NUT) is currently inviting students from overseas universities and polytechnics to apply for the inaugural Nagaoka Summer School for Young Engineers (NASSYE) in 2016. This program is open to students in their third or fourth year of university undergraduate programs, students in master’s programs, and students at polytechnics. The program also offers students the opportunity to participate in research on topics set by the laboratories at NUT, as well as experience tours of companies and factories in Nagaoka, Japan.

Program Outline

(1) Field of Study: *Mechanical Engineering

*Electrical, Electronics and Information Engineering *Materials Science and Technology

*Civil and Environmental Engineering *Bioengineering

*Information and Management Systems Engineering *Nuclear System Safety Engineering

(2) Number of Students to be Accepted: 20 students

(3) Program Period: August 22 to August 31, 2016

(4) Program Content:

*Participation in a research-based program at an assigned laboratory *Company and factory tours

Eligibility

Applicants must satisfy the following conditions:

1)Enrolled in the third or fourth year of an undergraduate program or a master’s program at an overseas university, or enrolled in an overseas polytechnic and scheduled to graduate before March 31, 2018

2)Have interest in enrolling in the master’s or doctoral programs at NUT in the future

3)Have at least one of following certifications of English language proficiency:

English

TOEFL iBT 61 or above

TOEFL CBT 173 or above

TOEFL PBT 500 or above

TOEIC 550 or above

IELTS 5 or above

Application Procedure

(1) Application Documents

Applicants must download the necessary forms from the website below and submit the following documents:

1)Application Form (Form A)

2)Certificate of Enrollment (Form B)

3)Academic Transcript

Only the official academic transcript with the institution’s authorized stamp or signature will be accepted. If the applicant is not able to obtain this transcript due to their institution’s regulations, they must obtain a certified true copy of the transcript. Certification must be made by the registrar or a representative of the institution. The administrative office of the institution may send the certificate directly to NUT.

4) Recommendation Letter

The recommendation letter should be written by the applicant’s academic advisor or head of department (or above).

5)Copy of Passport (Include the pages that indicate the applicant’s name, nationality, photograph, and date of birth)

6)Copy of English language proficiency test score as indicated in Section 3. The required inclusion of a standardized test score in the application can be waived if evidence is provided that the applicant is enrolled at an institution in which the medium of instruction is English.

(2)Additional Notes

1)All of the submitted materials above should be filled out in English or Japanese using a word processor or a black ballpoint pen (block letters). If a certificate is written in another language, the applicant must include a translation in English.

2)For the forms stipulated in Sections (1) 1) – 2) (Forms A and B), please use only the provided forms from the website indicated above.

3)The application will not be accepted unless all of the aforementioned application materials are fully and correctly completed. Applications will be rejected if any of the materials are insufficient or received after the deadline.

4)The application materials will not be returned to the applicant under any circumstances.

Note: The application form and required materials should be submitted by post or international courier service.

5. Selection Procedure

The selection procedure will involve an evaluation of the application documents based on each applicant’s academic performance and English language proficiency.

6. Announcement of Acceptance

NUT will send the screening results to successful applicants via e-mail on June 3, 2016. Accepted applicants will also be notified about their assigned academic advisor and research laboratory at NUT.

7. Participation Fee, Financial and Accommodation Support

The program is free of charge for successful applicants, and will not require any payments of participation fees. In addition, NUT will provide the following to each participant:

1)Scholarship: JPY 60,000

2)Accommodation in Nagaoka during the period specified in Section 1 (3).

NUT may provide participants with the opportunity to stay with a host family in Nagaoka. However, there is no guarantee that all participants who wish to stay with a host family will be able to do so. Please indicate your preference in Section 13 of the Application Form (Form A).

Note: Each participant is responsible for the following expenses: round-trip transportation from their home country to Nagaoka, accommodation fees (accommodation fee is free for participants who stay in the accommodations provided by NUT), daily expenses such as food and groceries, as well as the purchase of health and casualty insurance during their stay in Japan.
