Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Undergraduate Student Merit Scholarship
To support continuing, full-time undergraduate UTS Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences students who demonstrate financial need or other educational disadvantage(s).
Who is eligible?
To be eligible for the Scholarship, an applicant must meet all of the following criteria:
- Australian or New Zealand citizen, or holder of an Australian permanent resident visa or permanent humanitarian visa; and
- Enrolled in a UTS Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences undergraduate degree in the session the Scholarship is awarded; and
- At the time of Scholarship selection the applicant must have completed 48 credit points of their UTS Faculty of Arts and
- Social Sciences undergraduate degree; and
- Have applied through the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC) for an Equity Scholarship and therein demonstrate financial disadvantage; and
- Have submitted a UTS Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Scholarship application form; and
- Met satisfactory academic progression, or evidence of exceptional circumstances.
Previous recipients of this scholarship will not be eligible for this scholarship in future rounds.

How to apply
Applications are currently open.
To apply for this scholarship applicants must complete Part A and Part B of the Scholarship application form for their application to be complete.
Part A: You must complete an UAC Equity Scholarship application online at the UAC Website; and
Part B: Complete the UTS Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Undergraduate Student Merit Scholarship application form.
Applications close at close of business on the 6th March 2017.
NOTE: Incomplete applications will not be considered.

PURPOSE
To support continuing, full-time undergraduate UTS Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences students who demonstrate financial need. Students experiencing other educational disadvantage(s) may be preferenced.
VALUE AND BENEFIT
1. Number of Recipients
- Two (2) new Recipients will be awarded the Scholarship each year. Usually one (1) new Recipient will be awarded in Autumn session, and one (1) Recipient in Spring session.
2. Benefit/s to Recipient
The maximum total value of the Scholarship is $5,000 to each Recipient.
3. Payment of benefit/s:
- Each Recipient will receive one payment of $5,000 by electronic funds transfer to his/her nominated bank account.
- Payment is usually made within four weeks after the census date in Autumn and Spring sessions.
- Payments are subject to the Recipient satisfying ongoing eligibility criteria as defined in clause 8.
4. DURATION
- The duration of the Scholarship is one (1) session.
5. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
To be eligible for the Scholarship, an applicant must meet all of the following criteria:
- Australian or New Zealand citizen, or the holder of an Australian permanent resident visa or permanent humanitarian visa; and
- Enrolled full-time (minimum 18 credit points/session) in a UTS Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences undergraduate degree in the session the Scholarship is awarded; and
- At the time of Scholarship selection the applicant must have completed 48 credit points of their current UTS undergraduate degree; and
- Have applied through the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC) for an Equity Scholarship and therein demonstrate financial disadvantage; and
- ll candidates must apply using the UTS online Scholarship application form.
Previous recipients of this scholarship will not be eligible for this scholarship in future rounds.
6. RECIPIENT SELECTION CRITERIA, IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER
Academic excellence (GPA), based on results achieved in current course
- Financial disadvantage as demonstrated via the UAC Equity Scholarship application
- Motivation to succeed in the chosen Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences undergraduate degree, as demonstrated in the Scholarship application
- Demonstrated initiative in personal and professional life, as demonstrated in the Scholarship application.
In addition preference will be given to students that have experienced any long-term educational disadvantage as assessed by the UAC Equity Scholarship. The following equity criteria will be considered:
- Regional or remote background
- Sole parent responsibilities
- Carer responsibilities
- Long-term medical condition / disability or ongoing effects of abuse
- Indigenous Australian
- Refugee background
7. SELECTION
Applications of eligible candidates will be presented to a Scholarship Selection Committee, which will undertake the selection of the Recipient, usually in March each year for Autumn and August each year for Spring. The Scholarship Selection Committee will be made up of at least three relevant members of the UTS community and is to include:
- Chair: Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (or nominee); and
- A staff member representing the Equity and Diversity Unit; and
- A staff member experienced in the selection of Scholarships.
- Offers will be authorised by the chair of the Selection Committee.
8. ONGOING RECIPIENT ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
1. UTS enrolment
The Recipient:
- must continue to be enrolled full-time (enrolment in a minimum of 18 credit points/session)in a Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences undergraduate degree at UTS; or
- may, in exceptional circumstances1 apply to the UTS Scholarships Office for the Scholarship Selection
Committee’s approval of a part-time study load. The Recipient with an approved part-time study load may receive reduced Scholarship payments for the period of part-time study. The reduced Scholarship payment amount will be determined by the Scholarship Selection Committee at the time of the Recipient’s application for approval of part-time study.
2. Leave / Withdrawal
- If the Recipient withdraws from their UTS Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences undergraduate degree after the Scholarship has been awarded, the Scholarship will be terminated and any Scholarship payment already made for the session in which they withdraw is to be reimbursed to UTS.
- Leave of Absence in not permitted for this Scholarship.
3. Other obligations and conditions
- The offer of the Scholarship is made subject to information provided by the Recipient being true and accurate.
- By accepting the offer of the Scholarship, each Recipient agrees to the Conditions of Award.
- The offer of the Scholarship is only valid for the intake defined in the Scholarship letter of offer and cannot be deferred. For the duration of the Scholarship the Recipient is not permitted to hold other scholarships, unless an equity-based scholarship is approved by exception.
- The Recipient is responsible for advising the Scholarships Office of any changes in circumstances that would make him/her ineligible for continuation of the Scholarship, e.g. reducing study load to parttime, taking leave of absence or deferring study.
- Any change in the Recipient’s circumstances not addressed by these Conditions of Award will be considered by the Scholarships Office and/or the Scholarship Selection Committee case-by-case.
- The Recipient will be invited to consent to allowing his/her name, photograph and a short article to be used for the promotion of UTS.
9. TERMINATION OF RECIPIENT’S SCHOLARSHIP
The Scholarship will terminate:
- If the Recipient ceases to meet the eligibility criteria; or
- If the Recipient breaches any conditions of the Scholarship; or
- If UTS determines that the student is guilty of misconduct and after consultation with the Director of Student Administration, the delegate able to award the Scholarship deems that it is not appropriate for the Recipient to continue to hold the Scholarship.
- If the scholarship is terminated due to breaching any conditions or misconduct, the Recipient may be required to reimburse UTS for any scholarship payments already made.
