Steinberg Global Health Postdoctoral Fellowship

The call for applications for the 2017 Fellows is now open.

We are forever grateful to Mr. Arnold Steinberg and Professor Emerita Blema Steinberg, who sadly passed away in 2015 and 2017, respectively, for their steadfast support of global health at McGill. Their legacy will continue to motivate us as we work to position global health at McGill at the forefront internationally.

Program Description

Established in 2015 by The Blema and Arnold Steinberg Family Foundation, for entering or current postdoctoral fellows at McGill University who are pursuing research related to global health in low or middle income countries or among Aboriginal populations in Canada. Awarded by the Faculty of Medicine upon recommendation of Global Health Programs, to one or more postdoctoral fellows on the basis of academic merit. Value: $45,000, plus an annual travel stipend of $5,000; may be renewable once.

McGill University has a long history of diverse global health research and training programs. The range of global health teams and researchers at McGill is one of our strengths. Steinberg Global Health Postdoctoral Fellowships support the most promising scholars in global health and assist them in establishing a research base early in their careers. The program aims to support a diverse group of fellows with varying specialties and geographic areas of interest.

NOTE: The Fellowship particularly welcomes applications from citizens of LMIC countries and indigenous communities looking to study at McGill for their postdoctoral studies.

Program Details

  • Steinberg Global Health Postdoctoral Fellows will receive a generous stipend and travel expenditures totaling $50,000.
  • In addition to individual financial support for each Fellow, McGill Global Health Programs is interested in fostering professional development for the cohort of global health fellows at McGill. The Global Health Programs office will help facilitate opportunities as requested by global health postdoctoral fellows at McGill. Topics may include: Publication and research communication; Teaching in diverse settings and with various technologies; Project and human resources management; Leadership and teamwork; and/or Media relations.
  • Steinberg Global Health Fellows may have teaching responsibilities (approximately 10 hours per semester) in the Fundamentals of Global Health course, and/or as part of the Interprofessional Global Health Course. In addition, each fellow may be asked to give a public presentation on his or her research.
  • Please note that the renewal of the Fellowship for year 2 is not automatic. Candidates will need to re-apply, and they will be evaluated by the Awards Committee on their productivity and performance during the preceding year. These criteria along with a recommendation of the postdoctoral supervisor will be critical for a successful renewal.
  • Should Steinberg Fellows receive of an additional internal university fellowship or an external agency fellowship, the monetary value of the Steinberg Postdoctoral Fellowship will be reduced by an amount equal to the funds received from the other source. The fellow can keep the title of Steinberg Global Health Postdoctoral Fellow.
  • Steinberg Global Health Fellows must provide an update on their work to the donor’s Foundation on a yearly basis. (Reporting will be coordinated by Global Health Programs)
