Macgeorge Fellowships

The Macgeorge Fellowships are awarded to artists, performers, writers or researchers in the visual, creative and performing arts, music, architecture, conservation, literature, creative writing, language, history, philosophy and anthropology. They can be a resident of Australia or an international visitor.

Successful Macgeorge Fellows will undertake the Fellowship for the period July 2016 to June 2017. They will receive a contribution to travel fares and living expenses and accommodation at the historic ‘Ballangeich’ (former home of Norman Macgeorge, patron of the Arts) for 4-8 weeks to undertake an uninterrupted period of research, writing or creative endeavour. Macgeorge Fellows will be expected to deliver a public lecture/performance and Departmental seminar/postgraduate workshop on topics of interest to the University community and be available for consultation with staff and students during the Fellowship.

Departments/Divisions that are awarded a Macgeorge Fellowship will receive a contribution of up to $10,000 towards the total cost of the Fellowship. The Department/Division must host the visit to the University by the Macgeorge Fellow.

Macgeorge Fellows will be required to submit a Fellowship report within three months after the Fellowship has been completed.

Macgeorge Honorary Fellowships

Nominations for the Macgeorge Honorary Fellowships are awarded to artists, performers, writers or researchers in the visual, creative and performing arts, music, architecture, conservation, literature, creative writing, language, history, philosophy and anthropology who would benefit from interaction with the University community while working on a short-term project to advance their career. They can be a resident of Australia or an international visitor.

Successful Macgeorge Honorary Fellows will undertake the Honorary Fellowship for the period July 2016 to June 2017. They will be provided with accommodation at the historic ‘Ballangeich’ (former home of Norman Macgeorge, patron of the Arts) for 4-8 weeks to undertake an uninterrupted period of research, writing or creative endeavour. There is no requirement for Macgeorge Fellows to deliver a public lecture/performance and Departmental seminar/postgraduate workshop.

Departments/Divisions that are awarded a Macgeorge Honorary Fellowship must host the visit to the University by the Macgeorge Honorary Fellow.

Macgeorge Honorary Fellows will be required to submit a Fellowship report within three months after the Honorary Fellowship has been completed.

Eligibility

Macgeorge Fellowships are open to artists, performers, writers or researchers in the visual, creative and performing arts, music, architecture, conservation, literature, creative writing, language, history, philosophy and anthropology.

Macgeorge Honorary Fellowships are open to artists, performers, writers or researchers in the visual, creative and performing arts, music, architecture, conservation, literature, creative writing, language, history, philosophy and anthropology who have great potential in their field.

Nominees can be Australian citizens or citizens of any other country. They must be nominated by an appropriate Department/Division of the University of Melbourne to be eligible and the Department/Division must give the nominee an honorary appointment as a visitor to the University of Melbourne if the nomination is successful.

Applications

Nominations should be developed as a partnership between the Department/Division of the University of Melbourne and the individual. In making nominations, Departments/Divisions must provide in the following order:

1.Memorandum/email from the Head/Director including statements about —

the merit of the proposed Fellow;

the uniqueness of the opportunity for a visit by the proposed Fellow;

the expected benefits to the host Department/Division from the visit;

how the Award would facilitate the visit;

the Department’s/Division’s intention to give the nominee an honorary appointment as a visitor, host a public lecture/performance and Department/Division seminar/postgraduate workshop.

2.Details of the nominee, including —

current curriculum vitae;

website/location where recent work by the nominee can be viewed/heard.

3.Proposed Fellowship programme, including —

a two-page description of the proposed project;

two (2) sets of proposed residency dates for the 4-8 weeks at ‘Ballangeich’;

proposed title and brief summary of the proposed public lecture/performance and Departmental seminar/postgraduate workshop.

4.Proposed budget for the Fellowship —

economy class airfare;

taxi fares/car hire fees;

advertising fees associated with the public lecture/performance and Departmental seminar/postgraduate workshop;

living expenses of the nominee during the visit;

any other reasonable expenses associated with the Fellowship.
