Leeds International Summer School (LISS) offers you the opportunity to study at the University of Leeds and immerse yourself in British culture as part of an exciting four-week programme. Taking advantage of the vibrant, student friendly city of Leeds, and the rich history, culture and natural beauty of the area, the summer school combines world-class tuition with local knowledge, academic-related field trips, and a wide variety of social activities.
Our next summer school will run from Saturday 2 July to Sunday 31 July 2016.
You will choose two modules from a diverse range of subject areas, and earn up to 20 University of Leeds credits (equivalent to six US credits or 10 ECTS). Find out more
Through experiential learning and field trips, you will spend lots of time outside of the classroom, enjoying hands-on learning that will give you insights into British culture, history and society. Each module includes at least one field trip to support what you have learned in the classroom; destinations include Castle Howard in York, the Brontë Parsonage in Haworth and the cities of Manchester and Liverpool. Cultural excursions and social events
The summer school has a busy social programme to help you make the most of your time in Leeds as well as further afield. All of the social activities listed below are included in the programme fee:
- orientation activities
- a pub quiz
- sports socials
- three full-day excursions, to York, Whitby and the Yorkshire Dales
- a half-day excursion to Harewood House
- a farewell dinner
- a final two-night weekend trip to London (please note: the programme ends in London)
In addition to this, the summer school student social assistants organise various low-cost or free evening and weekend social activities in Leeds throughout the summer school. Two social assistants will live in the accommodation with you to provide support, knowledge of the local area and a friendly face.
As a summer school student, you will live in Henry Price, a hall of residence conveniently located on the University campus. You will have the privacy of your own room, but with a shared kitchen, bathroom and dining facilities you can socialise with other summer school students and make lifelong friends from around the world.
Cooking for yourself is a good way to keep costs down too. The kitchens have cooking facilities, but if you don’t feel like cooking for yourself there are lots of catering outlets on campus, so there’s plenty of choice.
You are expected to arrive at your allocated accommodation on Saturday 2 July and classes start Monday 4 July.
