Post-doctoral Researcher in Sociology of Education (M/F)

Research Area:
The post-doctoral researcher will be a member of the multidisciplinary “Institute of Education & Society” at the University of Luxembourg. Part of a diverse team in the dynamic organizational context of an international research university, you will work mainly with Professors Justin Powell and Andreas Hadjar in the Sociology of Education. The ideal candidate has substantive interests in education systems and inequalities, institutions and organizations, policymaking and social change processes; advanced methodological training (qualitative, quantitative, mixed-methods); and would like to work in an intercultural and multilingual team committed to the comparative analysis of societies. Knowledge of and research experience in multiple (higher) education and science systems advantageous. Current research projects examine education systems and inequalities; higher education and research institute development and scientific productivity; and the governance of educational research. Countries compared in these projects include Belgium, China, France, Germany, Japan, Luxembourg, Norway, Qatar, South Korea, Switzerland, Taiwan, United Kingdom, and the United States.

Your Role
  •  Project-based and independent research at the nexus of sociology and education, in particular, cross-national comparisons and institutional analysis.
  •  Publications in peer-reviewed journals (English and/or German preferred).
  •  Presentations and networking at scientific conferences (sociology and education).
  • Worldwide travel for fieldwork and collaboration with research partners in Europe, North America, and other regions.  
  • Teaching one or two graduate-level seminars per year in the research-based MA in Social Sciences and Educational Sciences (MASSES).
  •  Mentoring of doctoral candidates and independent guidance of student assistants.
  •  Transfer of relevant results to diverse communities from science and policy to wider publics.
  •  Administrative responsibilities within the project and the larger research group.

Your Profile
  • Degrees (MA, PhD) in sociology, education or a related discipline.
  • Research interests and experience in sociology and education 
  • Substantial knowledge of higher education and science systems.
  • Advanced theoretical and methodological training in social and educational sciences.
  • Experience in project management, team-building, and university-based administration.
  • Native or near-native command (speaking, reading, writing) of English and German, fluency in French (and other languages) beneficial.
