JUROR |Arlette Kayafas
Arlette Kayafas, opened Gallery Kayafas in 2002 in Boston’s historic South End.
Kayafas’ interest in art and artists has always been a focus of her curiosity and effort. She believes that as the owner of a gallery she has a responsibility to the artist, the client, the neighborhood, and her colleagues to exhibit only the best works. The gallery has a focus on the emerging artists and pairs such artists with established and well known photographers.
“I show work that is challenging, which is not always comfortable, but is powerful. I want an image to capture your attention and time. I want it to stop you when you walk by and show you something new each time you encounter the image. Everything I show is beautiful – not pretty. I don’t show work because I think it will sell, and I don’t not show work because it won’t sell. I use the gallery as a means to broaden horizons.”
The gallery often shows more than one artist at a time with very careful attention paid to how the various works relate. The visual conversation between artists is important. When asked how she chooses her artists and exhibits, she explains that she only shows work that she would own.
Kayafas is an overseer at the deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum and a member of Boston Art Dealer’s Association.
