International Garden Photography Competition 2017

Publish Date: Mar 07, 2017

Deadline: Oct 31, 2017

About the competition

International Garden Photographer of the Year is the world's premier competition and exhibition specialising in garden, plant, flower and botanical photography.

International Garden Photographer of the Year is wholly owned and organised by Garden World Images Ltd.

It is run in association with the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, United Kingdom. The main exhibition is held annually at Kew, with a rolling programme of touring exhibitions in the UK and all over the world. Exhibitions are linked to events such as workshops and lectures on garden photography.

The competition closes on October 31 every year. Winners are announced at the opening of the launch exhibition, the following February.

In addition, there are seasonal categories with results announced three times a year ('Photo Projects').

The competition is open to everyone, anywhere in the world. Images do not have to be taken in a specified year. There is no distinction drawn between professional and amateur photographers.

There are eleven main categories to enter and numerous special awards including Young Garden Photographer of the Year and a mobile only category, Gardens on the Go.

There is a fee for entering the competition which helps to cover the expense of administration. This fee is £12 for 4 single images, or £25 for a portfolio.

An illustrious limited edition hardback book of the exhibition is normally produced each year.

How to Enter

Entering is quick and easy. Just go to ENTER NOW, select your category and you're on the way. Just finish adding your profile then click 'purchase single entry' or 'purchase portfolio' button. You need to add a profile before you can enter images.

So you can, for example, buy 4 entry tokens for The Beauty of Plants. You can then, if you wish, buy 4 more tokens for The Beauty of Plants, or 4 more entry tokens for a different category - it is entirely your decision.

Or you may choose to enter a portfolio of 6 themed photographs. This costs £25 per category entered. You can enter as many portfolios as you like.

So you can, for example, buy a portfolio entry for The Beauty of Plants. You can then, if you wish, buy a second portfolio entry for The Beauty of Plants, or a portfolio entry for a different category such as My Garden Stories - it is entirely your decision.

Note that portfolio photographs will not be judged as single images. They will only be judged as one of six themed photographs.

My Garden Stories is a portfolio only category. Young Garden Photographer of the Year is a single entry only category.

Young Garden Photographer of the Year

Entries into Young Garden Photographer of the Year are for 17s and under and will now be £5 for 4 entry tokens. Please ask permission from a parent or guardian to enter the competition.

Feedback

Feedback has always been important to us. To continue to offer this service and make it sustainable we will now be asking for a fee. Professional feedback is available to buy through our shop.

Types of entry

Single images: These are judged as individual, stand-alone photographs.

Portfolios: A portfolio is a group of photographs that work both as individual images and as part of a themed collection. A portfolio can explore a location, a mood, a colour, a plant group, in fact any garden-related subject that fits into one of the categories - but all the images should relate to one another and to the theme as a whole.

My Dashboard

This is your space. A complete profile is a great first step to get started on your journey into garden photography. After competitions close, remember to login regularly to check the status of your entry; you will also be alerted via email, but checking the status in your dashboard is good practice as emails don't always make it through!

As well as updates on your entries, you will also see results of previous competitions and will be able to easily share these results.

How to Pay

Due to the volume of entries we receive, the most efficient way for you to pay is by PayPal - this also includes paying by most credit/debit cards. You do not have to have a PayPal account to do this. Note that the credit card transaction is undertaken by your card issuer in the normal way and will appear on your credit card statement marked 'PAYPAL' OR 'PAYPAL GARDEN WORLD IMAGES'.

Preparing your images

For all main category entries, we recommend the following capture guidelines.

Capture guidelines: * Minimum - JPEG, quality: high, at 300 ppi (pixels per inch). As a guide an 8 Megapixel image captured should be fine for printing at A4 (2480 x 3508 pixels).

* Ideal - TIF/JPEG, Adobe RGB (1998) colour profile at 300 ppi (pixels per inch) the image needs to be 3508 x 4961 pixels (A3 size and above would enable us to make larger prints if desired).

If shortlisted, a larger file with more data is always preferred.

For Gardens on the Go, please see the category for mobile entry guidelines.

Entry Guidelines

Please upload all initial entries at 1920 x 1080 at 72 ppi in sRGB colourspace.

Entries uploaded that are larger than this may get corrupted.

If shortlisted, you will then be asked for your largest version.
