Scientific illustration is here to stay!

The Catalan Association of Science Communication (hereinafter ACCC), established in the Rambla de Catalunya, 10 1st – 08007 Barcelona, organizes this award named “Illustraciencia, International Award on Scientific Illustration” sponsored by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness and the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT).

The participation in the award implies automatically the acceptance of these rules. By participating, the author authorizes, not exclusively, the organization to use, reproduce or publicly broadcast their works and his/her name in all activities and publications related to the Award or those in which it is mentioned, without the participant to receive any compensation for this reasons. The organization is committed not to commercialise or sell the works independently.

The participants assures and warrants to the organization that they are the unique owners of the copyright in the work submitted to the contest and they are fully responsible of not submitting works containing third party rights and they will face all claims of third parties related to image rights.

The ACCC is exempt from any obligation or compensation to the Award participants if  the award  would had been cancelled  or suspensed due to force majeure or law. In this case, the organization would conveniently inform to the participants. In the broadest interpretation of law, the participants exonerate the ACCC of any liability, penalty, claim, demand or civil commercial, criminal or administrative cause, including compensation of any nature, expenses and costs for any complaint it may receive as a result of a breach by the participants of any of their obligations which arise from these Terms (expressly including attorney and court fees).

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?

All work teams or individuals aged over 18 years old may participate in this Award regardless of the country of residence. The winner of the previous edition, the organizing committee and the members of the jury are excluded from this call.

HOW CAN I PARTICIPATE?

Each participant is able to submit only a single work. The day March 1st will activate the web form. In case of taking part as a team all members shall indicate their names. The work must have been created between January 2016 and May 5th, 2017. The subject of the illustrations must be related to science or nature and the technique is free. The participant must fill in the registration form of the official website․

The measure of the illustration must be A3 (420 x 297mm) 72 DPI in RGB and it should not include watermarks or texts (except signatures, numbers or figure letters and symbols). The participation form will include a text in Spanish, Catalan or English of (100-150 words) that explains, in addition to the species or element, some curiosity or characteristic shown in the illustration.

Optionally, the participants can send a text explaining the process of their illlustration creation using photographs or videos to hola@illustraciencia.info in order to be published in the #workinprogress blog section.

On June 1 the 40 selected will be published. The notification will be made by email. The 40 selected have to send the illustration adapted to be printed size A3 (420 x 297mm) 300 DPI in CMYK.

When formalizing the participation, contestants will have the option of publishing the work as Wikimedia Commons file for use in Wikipedia and other free cultural projects like WikiArS (Wikipedia Arts in School) by a free Creative Commons License (Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported License).

The participating images cannot be sent nor have been sent to other competitions or awards that are held simultaneously. Similarly, the works submitted to the contest must not be subjected to evaluation or opinion on any publishing until the jury’s opinion is issued. Otherwise, they will be disqualified.

SELECTION

From among all received proposals, the jury will select a maximum of 40 illustrations to being part of the Illustraciencia fifth edition exhibition taking into account their scientific accuracy, innovation in the field of scientific illustration and information capacity. Among these ones, the jury will select (unanimously or by a majority of votes) the winning proposal, the winners of the training awards and up to five special awards to the most outstanding works. The Audience Award will be made through popular vote on the award’s official website. 

JURY

The jury will be formed by representatives of the ACCC, professional experts of scientific communication and professionals in science illustration. The jury’s decision is final and will be announced on June 1st, 2017. From that date, the selected illustrators will receive the diploma via email.

AWARDS

The 5th edition of Illustraciencia will award two illustrations. The author of the winning illustration of the 5th edition of Illustraciencia will receive 600 euros, while the author of the work selected by the audience will receive 200 euros. The given Award will be subject to the tax provisions that are applicable.

For the audience award, anyone interested can vote the best work of a total of 40 works selected by the jury through the website of the award between June 1st and 30th.
