The Insight Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition is an annual celebration of the most spectacular visions of the cosmos. Astrophotographers of all skill levels are invited to submit their best images before an esteemed judging panel. We also run the Young Competition for budding astrophotographers aged 15 and under. The 2016 competitions will open for entries on 29 February and the deadline for entries to be submitted will be 14 April 2016. Information about prizes in the Insight Astronomy Photographer of the Year Adult and Young competitions.

Overall winner

The overall winner is chosen from amongst all the Adult competition category winners. This winner receives the prestigious title of Insight Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2016.

  • New bigger prize: £10,000

Categories

We have eight categories for you to enter and the judges will select a winner, runner-up and one highly commended entry from each category. These will receive the following prize money:

  • Winner: £1500
  • Runner-up: £500
  • Highly commended: £250

Special Prizes

The judges award two Special Prizes, Sir Patrick Moore for Best Newcomer and Robotic Scope. These will receive the following prize money:

  • Winner: £750

Young Competition Prizes

The judges select a winner, runner-up and three highly commended images for the Young Competition.

  • Young Winner: £1500
  • Young Runner-up: £500
  • Young Highly Commended: £250

Additional information

All winners will also receive:

  • Their winning image displayed in an exhibition at the Royal Observatory Greenwich
  • 1 year’s subscription to BBC Sky at Night magazine
  • A copy of the Insight Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2016 publication.
