Entries are open for the 2017 Hippocrates Prize for Poetry and Medicine 

The Hippocrates awards comprises

  • the Young Poets Prize and commendations
  • the Open Award with a 1st, 2nd and 3rd Prize and 20 commendations
  • the NHS Award for Health Professional-related staff and Health Professional students from anywhere in the world: a 1st, 2nd and 3rd Prize and 20 commendations

In its first 7 years, the Hippocrates Prize has attracted over 8000 entries from over 60 countries, from the Americas to Fiji and Finland to Australasia. 

The winning poems and commendations in Hippocrates Open, NHS and Young Poets Awards will be published in the annual Hippocrates Prize Anthology.

Deadline for all award categories: 12 midnight on 31st January, 2017.

Rules for the 2017 Hippocrates Prize Open and Health Professional categories

Deadline for Open International and NHS Awards: 12 midnight GMT 31st January, 2017.

Deadline for International Young Poet Award: 12 midnight GMT 31st January, 2017.

  1. The Hippocrates Prize for Poetry and Medicine is an annual international award for an unpublished poem on a medical subject. Poems must be no more than 50 lines in length and not have previously been published in any form. They must be by a living poet, written in English and should not be translations of another writer’s work. There is no limit to the number of entries.
  2. Poems should be entered online and must be accompanied by payment of £7 for each poem entered, by secure online payment.
  3. The online submission site will ask you to select OPEN if your entry is in the international open category, or NHS if you are entering entered in the category for National Health Service related employees (current or former) or UK health students. The writer’s name should not appear in the text box for your poem(s). A poem entered in the NHS category may win a prize in the Open category, but a poem entered in the Open category may not win a prize in the NHS category. No poem may win more than one prize. Proof of NHS employee or health student status will be required from winners in the NHS category.
  4. If you are unable to submit your poem online, you may send your submission to the address below. The cost of postal entry is £10 per poem. include with your cheque the name, contact details, and the title and first line for each poem. Your poem entry with its title should be on a separate page, with NHS or Open noted in the top right corner and without details that would identify you.   5. Entries for the 2017 Awards must be received by 12 midnight GMT, 31st January.
  6. The Hippocrates Prize judges will read a long-list prepared by filter judges, and their decision is final.
  7. Short-listed poets in all categories of the Hippocrates Prize will be informed by mid-April.
  8. Results will be announced at the Hippocrates Awards during an International Symposium on Poetry and Medicine. Winning poems will be published on the Hippocrates Prize website, in an Anthology of winning poems, and may be published in the Postgraduate Medical Journal, which is published by the Fellowship of Postgraduate Medicine, a major supporter of the Hippocrates Awards. Prize-winners will receive their awards by the end of July 2017.

The winning poems and commendations in all the 2017 Hippocrates Awards will be published in the annual Hippocrates Prize Anthology.

With a prize fund of £5500 for winning poems in the Open International category and NHS category, and £500 for the Young Poets Award, the Hippocrates Prize is one of the highest value poetry awards in the world for a single poem. The prize comprises a 1st, 2nd and 3rd Prize and 20 commendations in each of the Open and NHS categories and further commendations in the Young Poets Award. In its first 6 years, the Hippocrates Prize has attracted over 7000 entries from 61 countries, from the Americas to Fiji and Finland to Australasia.

Awards for the 2017 Prize will be announced by the judges at a ceremony at the end of the 8th International Symposium on Poetry and Medicine. 

Judges

Judges for the 2016 Hippocrates Prize Open and NHS Categories were poet Wendy French, winner of the inaugural Hippocrates NHS Prize, Harvard physician and poet Dr Rafael Campo, and the Rev. Gareth Powell, Secretary of the Methodist Church, and poet Siân Hughes for the 2016 Hippocrates Young Poets Prize.

Deadline: Deadline 12 midnight GMT 31st January, 2017.

Open Category: any national or international entry.

NHS Category: current or former health professional-related staff and health professional students.

£7 per online entry, £10 per postal entry.

Deadline for International Young Poet Award: 12 midnight GMT 31st January, 2017.

Young Poets Category: poets from anywhere in the world aged 14 to 18 years.

Awards are in three categories

  • an Open category, which anyone in the world may enter;
  • an NHS category which is open to Health Professional-related staff which is open to Health Professional Students from anywhere in the world, including UK National Health Service employees, health students and those working in professional organisations involved in education and training of NHS students and staff;
  • a Young Poets category in the international Hippocrates Prize for Young Poets for an unpublished poem in English on a medical theme. Entries are open to young poets from anywhere in the world aged 14 to 18 years.
