GSGS Summer School on Dates and Rates of Change in the Quaternary

For PhD students, postdoctoral researchers and advanced master's students in geosciences

The aim of this summer school is to provide an in-depth introduction into main dating tools and quantitative rate measures of processes that are used in Quaternary Sciences. It will be held entirely in English.

Topics and Methods

Topics include:

absolute ages and relative dates -
sediment ages - deposition rates – erosion – denudation – uplift – exposure and burial ages 

Methods covered are:

Ar/Ar-dating  |  cosmogenic nuclides  |  luminescence dating  |  palaeolimnology  |  palaeomagnetism  | (compound-specific) radiocarbon dating  |  tephrochronology

Costs

For everyone who is accepted as a participant, attendance of this workshop is free of charge. The costs are covered by the Graduate School of Geosciences, University of Cologne.

Included are:

  • lodging in shared accomodation (with fellow summer school attendants) at Burg Blankenheim Youth Hostel
  • Bed linen
  • Full board (all meals and the drinks provided during the summer school programme breaks)
  • Excursion (transport, lunch package)

Not included are:

  • Your personal travel to and from your home address to the location
  • Evening drinks (payable in cash)
  • Towels (bring your own!)

NB: For cancellations of confirmed participants after 24 July 2016 costs may apply.

Master's students should include a support letter from their advisor/supervisor.

A limited number of travel grants is available; applicants, particularly those from outside Germany, can request a travel grant in their initial application. See further details below under "Summer School Travel Grants".

Summer School Travel Grants

A limited number of travel grants is available, especially for participants from outside Germany.

You can apply for a travel grant by clearly stating so in your motivation letter. Let us know where you would be traveling from/to if this is different from your contact address.

If you are a master's student or a doctoral candidate (PhD student) and you apply for a travel grant, include a short support statement from your advisor/supervisor in your application.

We cannot guarantee that all funds applied for will be granted. Travel grants can be capped based on the flat rates as defined in the regulations of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), column ("Reisekostenpauschalen").

Further arrangements regarding reimbursement of travel costs will be made after a candidate has been accepted for participation.

Further Information

The Youth Hostel staff will try to accomodate dietary requirements (e.g. vegetarian, food allergies). Please let us know your preferences when your participation has been confirmed.
