Job description

Within this full-time tenure-track appointment (part-time is negotiable), you will work in the domain of English Language and Culture at the Bachelor and Master levels. You will be partially responsible for teaching English Linguistics and Academic Writing for English Linguistics, within our English Programme, as well as fulfilling related coordinating tasks. You will teach also within various related crosslingual MA programmes: in the Research Master in Linguistics, and possibly in the Master in Language Education as well. You will carry out research at an internationally acknowledged level within the area of English Linguistics, complementing the research programme of the Utrecht Institute of Linguistics (Uil-OTS).

You will also perform various job-related administrative tasks. We are especially interested in applicants whose areas of expertise include one or more of the following:

  • Sociolinguistics
  • Syntax

Additional areas of expertise considered to be of value are Second language acquisition (particularly in formal settings), Semantics/Pragmatics, and Phonetics/Phonology.

Successful applicants with outstanding research credentials may qualify for a higher amount of research (0.6 fte teaching; 0.4 fte research).

Qualifications

  • extensive experience in teaching English linguistics and academic writing of English, both at the bachelor and master levels;
  • extensive research experience in these areas, proven by a finished PhD and publications at an internationally recognised level;
  • experience with successful applications for external funding is recommended;
  • experience in a coordinating positions is recommended;
  • good communication skills;
  • basic teaching qualifications; if not, being prepared to obtain them;
  • fluency in English;

Non-Dutch candidates are required to reach fluency in Dutch within two years of appointment.

Offer

The appointment will be on a temporary basis for a period of two years (part-time is negotiable). According to University regulations you are expected to obtain basic teaching qualifications within this period of time. Given satisfactory performance within that period, the appointment will be followed by a permanent position. Depending on your knowledge and experience, your monthly gross salary will be minimally € 3,427 (scale 11 according to the Collective Employment Agreement of the Dutch Universities) and maximally € 5,330 (scale 12), based on a full-time basis.

Utrecht University offers a pension scheme, a holiday allowance of 8% per year, an end-of-year bonus of 8.3% and flexible terms of employment.
