Assessing vocabulary in/for/through the language skills
The aim of the Winter School is to address theoretical and practical underpinnings of assessing vocabulary and its relation to the language skills. The target audience is graduate students, pre- and in-service language teachers and teacher trainers, test developers and researchers, school program planners and other interested stakeholders involved in matters related to vocabulary assessment. An international audience is welcome and encouraged. Up to 40 participants can be accommodated.
Programme
The aim of the Winter School is to address theoretical and practical underpinnings of assessing vocabulary and its relation to the language skills.
The Winter School will be five days long, starting on Saturday, 6 January at 14:00 and ending on Wednesday, 10 January at 12:30. Apart from the opening and closing days, the activities will run 9:00 – 21:00 each day, with generous time slots in between for participants to enjoy the surrounding attractions .
- The construct of vocabulary knowledge and lexicogrammar
- The role of vocabulary for the language skills
- Key considerations and test formats for discrete and integrative testing of vocabulary
- Key considerations and test formats for testing depth and breadth of vocabulary knowledge
- Assessing vocabulary in/for/through the receptive skills
- Assessing vocabulary in/for/through the productive skills
- (Online) Resources: tools, corpora and word lists
It will comprise a mixture of lectures (with discussion) and practical workshops. For the workshops, participants will be split into two groups.
In the table below, you can find the preliminary programme, which might be subject to small changes. The detailed programme and timetable will be finalised and sent to participants at least one month before the start of the workshop. Participants will be asked to bring their own laptops.

Registration
Following EALTA policy, the participation fee for the Winter School has been kept at 250 Euros.
The participation fee for the Winter School will cover tuition and materials, as well as transfer from Innsbruck to Obergurgl (and return) and a coffee break for each of the 5 days. Accommodation and travel costs will have to be covered by the participants as well as any additional social/sporting events, if participants wish to do these.
The deadline for registrations is 15 September 2017. The registration fee and the rooms will have to be paid in full before that date. Information about method of payment will be given via e-mail.
