Publish Date: May 23, 2016

Deadline: May 26, 2016

Event Dates: from Jul 08, 2016 12:00 to Jul 16, 2016 12:00

“Fab City: Designing Products and Services for Urban Resilience through Manufacturing”

“Design Now” is a broad-framework programme of open collective activities organised by Politecnico di Milano’s School of Design and POLI.design Consortium with the support of Polifactory, Politecnico di Milano’s makerspace, in partnership with Triennale di Milano and with the patronage of Cumulus International Association, the most important worldwide network of Schools of Design, Arts and Media, comprising over 250 institutions. This programme aligns with the comeback of the Triennale di Milano International Exhibition, after 20 years.

“Design Now” focuses on concrete experimentation in one of the main themes of the XXI Triennale: the mutation generated by technological advance and social change in the processes and know-how applied to the ideation and production of contemporary artefacts. The advent of distributed production has modified the familiar roles and approaches practised and taught in recent design history. The main purpose of the initiative is to involve the most important Italian and international design schools in a practical design exploration of this key-theme for society and the designing discipline itself.

The programme of “Design Now” includes:

1. “When Production goes into the city” Jam focusing on the relationship between service design and new production-distribution models, in collaboration with PACO design;

2. “Fab City: Designing Products and Services for Urban Resilience through Manufacturing” Summer School, which will focus on selecting ideas and innovative experiences relating to urban resilience+manufacturing, in collaboration with IAAC and Fab City;

3. a closing Exhibition that will show all the process.

The international call for “Fab City: Designing Products and Services for Urban Resilience through Manufacturing” Summer School, taking place at the Politecnico’s School of Design and Polifactory, seeks to select talents who will develop and share innovative ideas and experiences.

The Summer School’s participants will engage in the challenge of designing for a Fab City according to specific new public policies for it: how designers will design for cities, when they will choose to become Fab Cities? The resulting projects may be for either products, services or product-service systems; participants will use digital fabrication technologies for the projects themselves and for creating dedicated interactive exhibitions for their display.

The main principles of designing in and for a Fab City are\

1. Design for liquid times

2. Design products with an urban strategy

3. Design interventions for constructive activism

The Summer School will try to address big questions relating to the future vision of cities, based on three main approaches:

1. Urban Data

2. Urban Strategies

3. Urban Models

The program includes some visits in Milan, to its Fab Labs and Makerspaces, and some lectures. However, the majority of the time will be dedicated to designing products, services or product-service systems for FAB Cities, for urban manufacturing, and public and commercial services.

The Summer School can count on the support of Polifactory.

If you are selected by the Scientific Committee, you will be able to join the Summer School “Fab City: Designing Products and Services for Urban Resilience through Manufacturing” with 10 other students selected during the “When Production goes into the city” Jam.

All the Summer School’s projects will be included in the closing Exhibition.
