Conf/CfP - Urban History Association Conference Graduate Student Poster Session, 13-16 October 2016, Illinois US

The Urban History Association (UHA) invites graduate students to submit proposals to the inaugural poster session at the Eighth Biennial Urban History Association Conference. Posters offer graduate scholars the opportunity to present original research in a visual way to share ideas, receive feedback, and network with fellow urban historians.

We encourage submissions that engage with the conference theme: The Working Urban. The conference theme highlights the importance of labor and of historians’ working definitions of “urban history” and solicits presentations that explore the scales at which historians work (i.e. local, national, regional) as well as those that interrogate the racial and gendered aspects of work in relation to the built environment. In recognition of urban history’s considerable breadth, we also seek contributions that make global comparisons and explore metropolitan politics in Latin America, Europe, Asia, Australia, the Middle East, and Africa. Posters on ancient and premodern as well as modern periods are welcome. Research that utilizes visual and material evidence is especially well-suited for a poster presentation. Posters will be evaluated on their visual appeal and creativity of design, as well as on the clarity of proposal and demonstration of critical engagement with the conference theme and major historiographical questions in urban history. Incomplete proposals will not be considered.

Requirements for submission

Submit proposal as a single PDF file to hgsa@luc.edu by April 1, 2016. Submissions should include:

1. Poster Title & Abstract (up to 300 words, including title)
2. Contact Information, including:
   • Participant name
   • Address
   • Email
   • Phone Number
   • Affiliation
   • A brief explanation of needs. You may request ½ of a 6’ table, access to one electrical outlet, and/or an easel and cardboard on which to display your poster. Wireless internet access will be available. Participants must provide their own computer if one will be used in the presentation. Due to limited space, projectors may not be used during the poster presentation.
3. One-page CV or resume
4. A one- or two-page visual mock-up of the display (created in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Photoshop, or Publisher, etc. and saved as a PDF).
