CFP: Contesting Modernisation: The Future of Health, Environment, and Welfare in China

Submissions are now open for the fourth annual CHEW Conference at the University of Oxford.
The CHEW Conference 2017 will focus on the crisis of modernity in contemporary China. While China has made great strides in modernisation, bringing greatbenefits to the population, numerous environmental, health and welfare issues have also arisen from this dramatic transformation.
This 2017 CHEW conference will bring together graduate students, early career researchers, and established academics from across social sciences and humanities to explore whether or not the current paradigm is sufficient in dealing with the complex and multifaceted issues that have arisen from rapid industralisation. Academic researchers, policy workers, and civil society actors working on issues relevant to China’s health, environment and welfare are welcome to submit an abstract of up to 300 words, covering themes including, but not limited to:
Environmental humanities and history in China Agriculture and food safety
Environmental humanities and history in China Agriculture and food safety
Human-animal relationships
The changing role of Chinese consumers
Water, land and air pollution
Social and environmental justice
Desertification and water scarcity Sustainable urbanisation
Ecological civilization
Climate change and China
Grassroots health, environment and welfare groups Environmental politics
Global climate change leadership in the era of Trump
