The Department of Philosophy and Cultural Heritage of Ca’ Foscari University Venice (Italy) is pleased to host the seventh edition of the SSPPP (Summer School of Phenomenology and Phenomenological Philosophy), which will take place on 1-5.7.2019.

Human, Not Enough Human
The phenomenological tradition has always entertained a complex and problematic relation with the idea of humanity, philosophical anthropology, and the human sciences. Different thinkers in the phenomenological tradition have addressed this relation in different and often competing ways. While Husserl’s transcendental phenomenology rejects anthropologism and naturalism, it nonetheless ascribes a central meaning and value to human life as the necessary focal point of the life-world. While Heidegger staunchly rejected any equivocation between his analysis of Dasein in Being and Time and philosophical anthropology, “the human” remains a critical and often polemical focus of his reflections on technology, language, and truth. While Sartre rejected inherited forms of humanism and human essentialism, his ontological existential thinking understands itself as forming the nodal point for a new humanism. While Arendt rejects the idea of a human nature and the foundation of action in thinking, her penetrating analysis of the human condition restores a certain philosophical respect to the meaning of human life and love of the world. Other thinkers such Alfred Schütz, Hans-Georg Gadamer, and Hans Blumenberg have taken up the rich legacy of this phenomenological debate about the past, present, and future of the human. In a time in which various forms of post-humanism and trans-humanism exert a growing influence on our culture, we believe that this phenomenological tradition offers vital and critical resources for a radical interrogation of the theme “human, not enough human.”
The seminars of the School will address different aspects of this broad theme. No previous background in phenomenology is required. Some advanced students will be encouraged to give a personal contribution to the School’s activities.
The number of attendants being limited, a selection will take place.
Deadline for submission: March 16, 2019
Notification of acceptance: March 18, 2019
A number of students will present short papers on the topic of this year’s edition. Each student presentation will last twenty minutes and will be followed by a thirty-minute discussion. Once the selection of this year’s students has taken place, we will circulate a call for abstracts among those admitted to the School.
A workshop on a text will take place during the last day. Students will be invited to work in groups and, subsequently, to participate in an open debate.
NON-REFUNDABLE PARTICIPATION FEE:
100 euro (also for previous attendants)
50 euro for Ca' Foscari students
Bank transfer fees cannot be deducted from the participation fee
The University of the West of England (Bristol) will cover the fee for its students.

The participation fee does not cover any expenses for travel, food, and lodging, although participants shall enjoy existing agreements between Ca’ Foscari and other institutions in Venice.
