Aalto University Summer School on Transportation

Aalto University Summer School on Transportation (ASTRA) offers innovative and practical approaches to understand and solve timely transport problems in both developed and developing countries. The school presents an intensive learning experience for transport professionals and graduate students of varying backgrounds.

Mobility Systems for Open and Happy Cities

The theme of the 13th Aalto University Summer School on Transportation is Mobility Systems for Open and Happy Cities. The theme is underlying Nordic values, such as transparency, social justice, trust, and citizen well-being. Furthermore, this theme is emphasizing value-driven approach as essential in re-imagining our future urban mobility systems. Activities during summer school include lectures, workshops and a site visit, focused on various aspects of planning and policy, including technological trends and variety of quantitative and qualitative methods. 

Our lecturers include renowned experts from Aalto University, as well as University of Amsterdam, Tel Aviv University, Simon Fraser University, University of Toronto, University of Birmingham, University College London, Vrije Universiteit Brussel, TU Delft, Placemakers and BCNecologia. The lecturers will include renowned experts from Aalto University, as well as University of Amsterdam, Tel Aviv University, Simon Fraser University, University of Toronto, University of Birmingham, University College London, Vrije Universiteit Brussel, TU Delft, as well as Placemakers and BCNecologia. . This year, Summer School will also strongly collaborate with planners from the City of Helsinki, who will provide and interact in two strategic planning cases areas in the city. In addition, Summer School will collaborate with NECTAR conference, to be held in Helsinki June 5-7, 2019. Through this collaboration, students will get a chance to present their work from Summer School during NECTAR conference, to engage academics and practicioners. 

Expected audience

The Summer School is intended for transportation professionals, managers in transport agencies, transport and traffic engineers, planners, transport consultants, citizen advocates, educators, and advanced graduate students in their master's or doctoral studies. Expected class size is 40. In the past, the participants were from countries across the world.

Venue

The 2019 Summer School will take place May 29 – June 4 on the famous Otaniemi campus of Aalto University in Espoo, Finland.

Registration fees and course credits

The registration fee of EUR 700 includes course material and banquet. After June 15, 2018, the fee is EUR 900. The attendees may earn study credits in the Aalto University School of Engineering (2–3 ECTS credits).

There is a possibility of one day (EUR 150) and one lecture registration (EUR 50). Please contact Summer School Coordinator in these cases.

Student scholarships

A limited number of scholarships for the registration fee is available for master and doctoral students enrolled at a university at the time of application. The scholarship does not cover accommodation and travel costs.
