CALL FOR PAPERS

FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS IN THE EARLY MODERN IBERIAN MONARCHIES

Organised by Regina Grafe and Íñigo Ena Sanjuán (EUI)

Call for papers for a workshop in the framework of the project “Colonial legacies, invisible institutions and financial markets in Latin America (and beyond)”

Strong financial institutions are considered a conditio sine qua non for an economy to grow in a sustained way. Financial innovation has been usually interpreted as the key to the political and economic expansion of North-Western European powers during the early modern period. Conversely, the poor performance of the financial institutions both in the Iberian metropoles and Latin America since the early nineteenth century has been seen as the consequence of institutions ill-suited to economic growth and the absence of a secure legal framework in pre-modern times. Yet recent scholarship has challenged these assumptions. Although completely different from those existing in North and Western Europe, the financial institutions developed in the Iberian monarchies provided impersonal, easily accessible, and affordable credit.

This workshop aspires to bring together early-stage researchers working in financial instruments (censos, mortgage registers, shipping finance, usury laws), institutions (ecclesiastical chapters, convents, mercantile corporations, fiscal treasuries, notaries, courts dealing with financial matters), and individuals and groups involved in financial affairs in the Iberian monarchies, both in the European and American dominions. The workshop is intended not only to explore the functioning of those instruments and institutions, but also to determine how they were related to each other.

The workshop will consist of two sessions. The first of them will be held on the 27th of September 2021 online. If public health restrictions allow it, the second part of the workshop will take place on the 21st and 22nd of October 2021, at the European University Institute in Florence. Needs-based travel bursaries will be available especially for those in need of intercontinental travel.

The aim of the workshop is to produce publishable papers. Even though the final version of the papers will be written in English, both working papers and presentations can be in English, Spanish, and Portuguese.

Interested scholars, both Ph.D candidates and post-doctoral researchers, are invited to submit a short proposal (maximum 500 words), either in English, Spanish, or Portuguese, as well as a short CV (maximum two pages) to the following email address: inigo.enasanjuan@eui.eu. The deadline for the submission is the 31st of July 2021. Decisions of acceptance will be communicated by mid-August. Women researchers and scholars from the Global South are particularly encouraged to apply.
