The Trustees of the Loeb Classical Library Foundation announce funding of four two-year postdoctoral fellowships to be held in the academic years 2021–2023. [A further four fellowships will be funded for the academic years 2022–2024] The details for the first round of competition for these fellowships are as follows:
Eligibility: Doctoral dissertation in the US or abroad in any area of classical studies, completed in the academic years 2019/20 or 2020/21.
Stipend: $50,000 plus reimbursements for health benefits (to $5000) if needed, and for modest moving expenses (to $1500) where needed to take advantage of a Visiting Scholar status (on which see further below); $2000 research fund.
Application Deadline (firm): February 15, 2021, all materials.
Residency: Fellows should aim to establish a visiting scholar relationship with an academic institution (in some cases the home institution may be the most suitable) in which they can best carry out their research program.
Application Materials: A cover letter; a proposal (maximum 1000 words) for a specific research project to be carried out during the term of the fellowship, including a rationale for the proposed academic affiliation (see above); curriculum vitae; 3 letters of recommendation (submitted online); writing sample (5000–10,000 words); (for 2021 degree candidates) TOC with page range of completed chapters, detailed statement in dissertation adviser’s letter on prospects for completion.
Explanatory Note : The purpose of this two-year cycle of postdoctoral fellowships is very specific. The current economic downturn and uncertainties about the immediate future of higher education pose a particular challenge for the newest members of the teaching/research profession. These fellowships are intended to support the work of promising scholars for the next two to three years,
specifically those scholars who will be going on the market more or less for the first time in this period.
