CatchLight Visual Leadership Fellowship
We’re accepting applications for the 2020 $30,000 CatchLight Visual Leadership Fellowship. Now in its fourth year, CatchLight continues to search for innovative visual storytellers and leaders committed to advancing and growing the field of visual storytelling. The grant applications are due before midnight PST on February 4, 2020.
Last year CatchLight supported a large-scale peace-building VR project led by Sparsh Ahuja, Alexandra Bell’s exploration of what a solutions journalism framework could look like in a futuristic newspaper, Tasneem Alsultan’s collaborative storytelling approach to connect women and their stories throughout Saudi Arabia and Pierre Terdjiman’s innovative education and engagement model.
As part of CatchLight’s commitment to ensuring the long-term sustainability of the visual storytelling field, CatchLight is looking to support innovative leaders who work to help grow and further the profession. CatchLight invests in impact — both on the visual storytelling field overall and the social issues our Fellows address.
ELEMENTS OF THE PROGRAM:
Financial Grant: a $30,000 award will be distributed throughout the fellowship year to support the production and development of the Fellow and project.
Project Development and Network Building: personalized project development and networking opportunities through CatchLight’s vibrant community of creative thought leaders across media, art and entrepreneurship. Fellows will participate in person at two key CatchLight programs in San Francisco: a kickoff weekend in May, 2020 and a Leadership Retreat in November, 2020.
Amplification: During the first year, Fellows will work on their proposed project with the networking support of CatchLight. CatchLight will offer continued amplification and engagement support for another year past the fellowship year. The nature of the awarded fellow’s work will determine the appropriate partnerships, model, and timeline for distribution.
Eligibility: We are looking for exceptional talent, commitment to impact and sustainability of the field. The Fellowship is open to all people of all ages and all countries who work with visual communication, including videographers and photographers working with lens-led technology for the purposes of visual storytelling, and a specific commitment to effecting change. Applicants may work in a broad range of visual formats including photography, video, audio, motion, data visualization or VR.
Applicants must apply as individuals. Business entities and institutions will not be eligible. CatchLight will look favorably on applicants who demonstrate willingness to work collaboratively with distribution and impact partners, including media organizations and advocacy experts, to develop their projects and maximize the reach of the work.
Application: The application portal opens on January 7th and the deadline to apply is February 4th at midnight PST. The CatchLight Visual Leadership Fellowship pool will be formed by both nomination and open call. Application includes work samples, professional references, a written proposal with the scope of project, and potential ideas for partnerships and distribution avenues that best fit the proposal. Applicants should state how they plan to use the available support and resources to oversee a defined outcome. Applications will be reviewed and shortlisted by a geographically and professionally diverse jury. There is no fee to apply.
