The School of History and Geography at Dublin City University, ranked as one of the top 100 universities under 50 as per Times Higher Education, is a research active school in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Science.
Research and innovation are at the heart of the School’s activities. The School has a strong research track record in Irish and European history, the historical geography of Ireland, social and physical geography and geopolitics. A primary focus of research is the island of Ireland – its history and its geography – and members of the school have produced, and are engaged in the production of pioneering work on diverse aspects of medieval, early modern and modern Irish history, and the historical geography of the island in the early modern and modern era. Current research in the social geography of Ireland, in regional geography internationally and in past climates and climate change are evidence not only of the extent of the school’s research footprint, but also its commitment to inform and to shape understanding and policy in modern Ireland.
We are currently offering two full-time doctoral scholarships, and invite applicants who wish to undertake PhD research in the following areas:
History
- Irish History (political, social, gender etc.);
- Environmental History;
- History of Science and Medicine;
- Modern European History (particularly the history of Eastern Europe in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries).
Geography
- Irish Urban or Rural Historical Geography;
- Social Geography;
- Irish Geomorphology;
- Irish Water Resources;,
- Remote Sensing;
- Geopolitics.
Outstanding candidates will be offered scholarships which cover all tuition fees (EU or non-EU), and provide an annual stipend for living expenses of €16,000 pa for up to 4 years subject to satisfactory annual progression.
