Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Poetics 2019 - 2020
Deadline for Applications: January 16, 2019 Announcement of Awards: Begins mid-April and continues until all positions are filled.The Bill and Carol Fox Center for Humanistic Inquiry announces a Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Poetics, funded by a Challenge Grant awarded by the National Endowment for the Humanities, for an academic year of research, writing, teaching, and residence at the Center. Please note that Post-Doctoral Fellows, who must have the Ph.D. in hand before submission of their applications, are awarded to those who have held the Ph.D. for no more than six years before receiving the Fellowship.
The Fellowship will highlight the ongoing critical, theoretical, and creative engagements with poetry across Emory University. In addition, the Fellowship marks the emergence of the Stuart A. Rose Manuscripts, Archives, and Rare Books Library as a major center for research in poetry.
The purpose of the FCHI Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Poetics Program is to stimulate and support the humanistic research of scholars in the early stages of their careers with time, space, and other resources. An essential feature of the Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Poetics Program is the expectation that Fellows make intellectual contributions not only within the Center, but, more widely, to humanistic studies at Emory. Thus Poetics Fellows will be expected to offer an upper-level undergraduate course on a subject of their choice during the spring of their fellowship year. Stipends of $47,000 will be offered to Post-Doctoral Fellows in Poetics. In addition, a research fund of $2,000 will be made available to each Fellow, along with shared office space in the Center and access to the Emory University Libraries.
ELIGIBILITY
The Ph.D. must be in hand before the application deadline of January 16, 2019. Post-Doctoral Fellowships are awarded to those who have held the Ph.D. for no more than six years before receiving the Fellowship.
The FCHI Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Poetics Program is designed to offer research opportunities both to those trained in the humanities as traditionally defined and to others working with humanistic issues. Research projects must be humanistic, but applicants may hold the Ph.D. in any discipline. The Center encourages applications from scholars whose research is likely to contribute to intellectual exchange among a diverse group of scholars within the disciplines of the humanities.
Because the FCHI is a residential center, its intellectual life depends on collegial interaction. Fellows will be expected to be in residence full-time during both terms of the regular academic year and to take an active part in the life of the FCHI, as well as in the intellectual life of the larger University. Since a primary purpose of the Post-Doctoral Fellows Program is to create a diverse community of scholars in residence at the Center as well as to introduce Emory University to promising work beyond its walls, currently preference will be given to applicants who are not affiliated with Emory.
SELECTION CRITERIA
Applications will be judged on the promise and significance of the proposed research project, in relation to the applicant’s own work and that of other scholars; the intellectual distinction of the applicant’s previous work; the applicant’s ability to engage in collegial interactions that will substantively contribute to the FCHI and to the University; and the contributions that the applicant’s proposed course will make to the FCHI, the College, and the University. Evaluators will look for applicants and projects that will benefit from and contribute to the interdisciplinary work of the group of Fellows and the mission of the FCHI. Evaluators will also seek variety and balance among the disciplines represented at the Center. Fellows are expected to make substantial progress on a book project during their time at the FCHI. FELLOWSHIP REQUIREMENTS
Upon notification of an FCHI Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Poetics Award, recipients must agree to: conduct research in residence full-time at the FCHI for the academic year; take full responsibility for contributing to and maintaining an environment conducive to academic research while at the Center; submit a final report of progress to the Director at the end of the Fellowship; acknowledge the FCHI in all work resulting from research and writing done during the Fellowship; teach an undergraduate course in the spring term of the Fellowship year; attend all Fellows’ lunches, lectures, and programs sponsored by the FCHI during their terms of residence; immediately notify the FCHI of any other support or of any conflicts with the restrictions and conditions of this Fellowship Program; for three years following the Fellowship, provide written reports to the Director of the FCHI detailing how their teaching and research has been influenced by the time spent during the Fellowship; and if applicable, return to their Emory University positions for the year immediately following their Fellowship.
