Postdoctoral Fellowship Scheme

The CLASS Postdoctoral Fellowship (PDF) scheme supports recent PhD graduates in undertaking thematic research projects in the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences. Past themes include Digital Humanities, Medical Humanities, Global Cities, and Interdisciplinary Humanities.

Since 2010, over 30 postdoctoral fellows have been recruited under this scheme. Each CLASS PDF is assigned to a cluster of faculty members from a variety of research backgrounds who serve as mentors on the research project that the fellow is working on.

CLASS puts out calls for applications for the CLASS Postdoctoral Fellowship annually.

Postdoctoral Fellowships

The Centre for Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS), College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences, Nanyang Technological University invites applications for postdoctoral fellowships for the Academic Year 2018.

Successful candidates will be affiliated with one or more than one of the constituent schools of the College—namely, School of Art, Design, and Media (ADM), School of Humanities (SoH), School of Social Sciences (SSS), and the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information (WKWSCI).

Applications are welcome for the themes listed below. Preference will be given to projects that cut across disciplinary boundaries in the humanities, arts, and social sciences. Successful candidates are expected to begin their fellowships in July or August 2018.

Themes

A. Health and society: Healthcare issues from humanistic and social scientific perspectives
     (e.g. aging; communication; healthcare delivery)

B. Science, technology, and society

C. Digital art, humanities and social sciences

Prerequisites:

Applicants must possess a doctoral degree issued no more than 3 years prior to the time of application (i.e. the degree must have been obtained after Jan 1, 2015). Candidates who are finishing up their degrees must have been conferred their doctoral degrees by July 2018.

Housing

The University does not provide housing for postdoctoral fellows. Prior to arriving in Singapore, postdoctoral fellows may wish to make temporary accommodation arrangements for their first weeks in Singapore. They shall bear the accommodation expenses themselves.
Temporary on-campus accommodations:
Newly arrived postdoctoral fellows could explore on-campus room rentals, which are subject to availability. As at Oct 2014, the rental rates are S$30/night for a master bedroom and S$25/night for a regular room. The maximum duration of stay is one month. Further information can be obtained by emailing NTU Shared Services-Human Resources (NSS HR).

Research & Conference Travel

CLASS postdoctoral fellows may claim up to S$5,000 per year for local/overseas conferences*, fieldwork or other expenses related to their research work.  This includes air ticket by the most economical route, per diem, registration fees, etc.
* To be eligible for conference attendance and travel reimbursements, postdoctoral fellows must have given presentations at the conferences.

Taking leave:

Any fieldwork or research that would entail absences from Singapore should be brought up with the postdoctoral fellow’s mentor(s) as early on as possible. Postdoctoral fellows must apply for leave for conference or research purposes via the Business Travel System on Stafflink. Leave taken for such purposes does not count towards one’s annual leave.
Prior to this, it is recommended that they present timelines of their anticipated trips and plans for overseas research activities to their mentor(s) and Head of Division (and, if needed, the Associate Dean (Research)). Research trips exceeding 30 days may need special approval from OHR; check with the School’s HR about procedures for seeking such approval.
When applying for business travel leave, postdoctoral fellows should select their Head of Division as the approver and, at the same time, send a copy of the application to their primary mentor.

Claims

Reimbursement claims for conference and research trips are to be done via the Business Travel System as soon as possible after returning from the trips. Any hardcopy documents that need to be submitted with the claims are to be handed to the postdoctoral fellow’s division administrators for processing.

Seminar Series

CLASS organizes seminars throughout the academic year in which second-year CLASS postdoctoral fellows and research fellows from the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences present their works-in-progress and/or research findings. CLASS postdoctoral fellows who are in their first year do not need to give presentations on this platform, but they get involved by participating in the seminars.

Settling-in Allowance

CLASS postdoctoral fellows are eligible for a one-time settling-in allowance of S$2,000 for themselves. If they are accompanied by their spouse and children, they would be eligible for an additional S$2,000 for the spouse and S$1,000 for each child (up to a maximum of 3 children). If the postdoctoral fellow resigns or terminates his/her contract before the end of the first year, s/he would have to return the full amount of his/her settling-in allowance.
CLASS postdoctoral fellows should check with their division administrators about the processing of their settling-in allowances when they first check in at their divisions.

Teaching

Postdoctoral fellows, their mentors, and assigned divisions can mutually agree upon arrangements for them to teach up to the equivalent of one semester-based course per academic year. Since planning for courses is done months in advance by the divisions, postdoctoral fellows and mentors should bring up any plans for the postdoctoral fellows to teach as early on as possible.
