Zepter International Design Award – ARTZEPT 2016

Publish Date: May 11, 2016

Deadline: Sep 30, 2016

Zepter International is pleased to announce the 13thARTZEPT design competition 2016 entitled:

THE ART OF FRAMES

There are many kinds of treasures – material and non-material - which, for most of us, hold an immense, immeasurable value.

Material riches such as jewellery, money, bonds, gold or gems are usually kept in banks and well-secured vaults, but those of far greater value – our memories, recollections and impressions – we try to safeguard not from thieves, but from a more ominous and cunning predator – oblivion.

A way to protect these reminders of beautiful, precious, but occasionally heart-rending moments in our lives are photographs, paintings, and portraits of loved ones. To emphasise their personal value, we put them in frames.

Picture frames are much older than we think. In fact, they have existed for much longer than photography. Did you know that the first picture frames date back to ancient Egypt?

The earliest frames were framing borders used for dividing scenes in ancient Egyptian and Greek wall paintings. However, one of the oldest frames as we know them today dates from the 2nd century AD – a Fayum mummy portrait, discovered in an Egyptian tomb still within its decorative wooden frame. Throughout history, from Antiquity through to the Renaissance and Baroque periods, from Classicism to Modernism, frames have changed in both style and function.

So, what do we expect from our artists and designers, participants in the contest?

First of all, we expect new, creative ideas for the design and shape of frames for paintings, photographs and mirrors to enclose our cherished memories, fragments of life, lasting impressions, imageries of scenes, and even reflections of ourselves captured in the mirrors of our daily lives...

We trust your imagination and creativity to design and shape the form, choose the material, highlight the function, or indeed any other feature that supports your main idea for enclosing our priceless valuables such as memories, tastes, life... so, dear contestants, fire up your imagination!

Presentation and submission of entries

  1. a. The 3D digital model and rendering

    The objects produced must be geometrically precise, accurate, detailed 3D digital models made using CAD/CAM or CAID software (programs such as Catia, Solid Works, ProE, Alias/Wavefront, Rhinoceros and the like) and also presented in high resolution rendered images so as to clearly show the appearance and purpose of the object (its shape, dimensions, material, finish and coating).
    Additionally, the work may be presented as a digital animation or a physical model produced using additive technology (a 3D print).
    Prior to sending the design, the artists should complete and submit an electronic application form available at the official website.

    The postal submission of the digital model must include:

    1. A printed completed application form downloaded from the official website. If handwritten, the form should be written in block capitals and legible.
    2. A printed rendering of the work – one or more A4 sheets.
    3. A short conceptual summary of the work submitted (up to 300 words) –printed on an A4 sheet of paper.
    4. A CD or a DVD of the design containing the following files:
      • A 3D digital model of the design in IGES or STEP format;
      • A preparation file for digital printing of the rendering in EPS, PDF or other standard imaging formats, CMYK, 300 PPI, printed size – B2 (500 x 700 mm);
      • A short conceptual summary of the work submitted (up to 300 words);
      • Other digital files that the author deems necessary to better understand the work submitted.
    5. Along with the digital presentation, designers are advised to use 3D Printing (the so-called additive technologies) in order to submit a physical 3D presentation of their design. The 3D presentation could be a prototype, a functional model, a life-size model or, in the case of a larger object, an appropriately scaled model.
  1. b. A 3D physical model done in a material

    The 3D physical model of the designs must be produced in the chosen material making use of traditional artistic or design techniques and in gallery format no larger than 1 meter.
    Prior to sending the design, the artists should complete and submit an electronic application form available at the official website.

    Postal submission of the physical model created in the chosen material must include:

    1. A printed completed application form downloaded from the official website. If handwritten, the form should be filled out in block capitals and legible.
