PhD in amphibian evolutionary ecology

Uppsala University is a comprehensive research-intensive university with a strong international standing. Our mission is to pursue top-quality research and education and to interact constructively with society. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has 44.000 students, 7.100 employees and a turnover of SEK 7 billion.

A PhD student position in amphibian evolutionary ecology is available at the Department of Ecology and Genetics, Animal Ecology.

The Department of Ecology and Genetics is an international environment with staff and students from all over the world. Our research spans from evolutionary ecology and genetics to studies of ecosystems. For more information, see www.ieg.uu.se.

Project description/ duties: The fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) causes the disease chytridiomycosis and is a major cause factor behind the global declines of amphibians. This position is aimed at elucidating the relationship between Bd infection and fitness in natural populations of Swedish amphibians. The main objective is to understand how Bd will affect Swedish amphibian populations in the changing climate. We will study experimentally and using genomic techniques how resistance differs among amphibian species and populations. The project is supervised by Professor Jacob Höglund and Professor Anssi Laurila and will be conducted in collaboration with Professor Jonas Waldenström in Linnaeus University in Kalmar. The position is jointly funded by the research council Formas and Uppsala University.

Qualifications required: To be eligible for a PhD-student position the applicant must hold a master degree within ecology, evolutionary biology or equivalent. A high standard of spoken and written English is required.

Qualifications desired: Experience on genomic techniques and amphibian ecology/evolutionary biology.
