University of Oslo Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Geophysical Flows

The fellowship period is 3 years. Within the framework of the position duties may be assigned. Starting date no later than 01.10.2016. No one can be appointed for more than one specified period at the same institution.

Job description

The Post doctoral position will be part of the cross-disciplinary research group ‘Physics of Geological Processes’ (PGP), in collaboration with the cryosphere research group of the section of Geography and Hydrology (GeoHyd) at the University of Oslo. PGP includes researchers from Department of Geosciences, Department of Physics and Department of Mathematics and combines field studies, experimental studies, numerical modeling and theory to understand geophysical processes. GeoHyd is a section of the Department of Geosciences studying among others glacial and periglacial processes, related natural hazards, and the use of satellite methods to investigate them.

The postdoctoral fellow will play an important role in developing and carrying out novel studies of glacier sliding by describing the dynamics of the glacier-bedrock interface as a tribology problem. Emphasis will be on investigating the transitions between different modes of motion (stagnant, slow, fast) and on closing the scale gap between microscopic interface processes and their macroscopic manifestation

Requirements/qualifications

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has a strategic ambition of being a leading research faculty. Candidates will be selected in accordance with this, and are expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials. Applications are encouraged from dedicated candidates with excellent writing skills and the ability to work in a highly team-orientated environment.

We seek a highly motivated candidate with a PhD degree in physics, geophysics, or other relevant discipline to work within the project ‘EarthFLows’ funded as a Strategic Research Initiative at the University of Oslo.

The candidate must have a strong background in modeling geophysical flow processes, and preferably competence in friction or other relevant interface processes.

The postdoctoral fellow will closely collaborate with a PhD student working on subglacial hydrology.

Candidates are expected to be able to work independently, and to have good communication and collaboration skills.

The main purpose of post-doctoral research fellowships is to qualify researchers for work in top academic positions within their disciplines.
