Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Statistical Analysis of Socio- Ecological Systems

Position as postdoctoral research fellow available available at Centre for Ecological and Evolutionary Synthesis (CEES), Department of Biosciences.

The fellowship period is 3 years. Within the framework of the position duties may be assigned. No one can be appointed for more than one specified period at the same institution.

Project description

We look for a bright, enthusiastic, and energetic scholar to join our team. NATCOOP is a junior research group consisting of the PI Florian Diekert, one PostDoc (this position) and two PhD students. It is funded by an ERC-Starting Grant (Project title: "How nature affects cooperation" – NATCOOP) to Florian Diekert and investigates how nature shapes preferences and incentives of economic agents and how this in turn affects common-pool resource management. In particular, the threat of a regime shift could change the social context, enabling agents to coordinate on the collectively optimal outcome. If so, policies could be designed to support and catalyze such tendencies. However, a key challenge is to empirically disentangle the natural and the human-induced causes of real world regime shifts (such as the change from a haplichrome to a nile-perch dominated system in Lake Victoria, or the collapse of the anchovy populations in Chile).

Qualifications

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has a strategic ambition of being a leading research faculty. Candidates for these fellowships will be selected in accordance with this, and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.

Applicants must hold a PhD-degree (or other corresponding education equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree). We look for a researcher with a strong empirical background and a keen interest in socio-ecological systems. The applicant must document experience in statistical analysis or applied modeling of regime shifts. The disciplinary classification is of little concern. The candidate will be hosted by the Centre for Ecological and Evolutionary Synthesis at the Dept. of Biosciences and will be associated with the Centre's marine group.

The candidate will work in close collaboration with the rest of the NATCOOP's team at the University of Heidelberg, Germany. Regular visits and extended stays ensure the integration of the research team. Moreover, since the project may involve field-work in Tanzania or Chile, language skills in Swahili or Spanish are a strong asset.

We seek a highly motivated, enthusiastic person with the ambition to push the research frontier on socio-ecological systems and publish papers in leading, international journals, and in possession of good interpersonal skills and willingness to work in close collaboration with others.

The main purpose of post-doctoral research fellowships is to qualify researchers for work in top academic positions within their disciplines.
