University of Oslo Postdoctoral Fellow in Human Geography

There is a vacant position at the Department of Sociology and Human Geography for a Postdoctoral Fellow (SKO1352) in Human Geography, with specialization in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) as a research tool. The position is for a period of up to 4 years with 25 % compulsory work (primarily teaching GIS courses at the department). Applicants, who at the time of appointment cannot provide documentary evidence of basic formal teaching competence, must acquire such competence within two years by completing a mandatory pedagogical course provided by UiO.

Desired qualifications and Personal skills

Applicants must have a PhD in Human Geography, with a specialization that involves application of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) as a research tool. Only candidates who have submitted their doctoral thesis prior to the application closing date may apply for the position. A prerequisite for taking up the position is the successful completion of a doctoral degree.

Applicants must submit a postdoctoral project involving GIS and be related to one or more of the Department's prioritized areas for teaching and research within Human Geography: economic, political, development, urban, labor and environmental geography.

When evaluating the application, emphasis will be placed on the applicant’s academic and personal competence to carry out the research project. Applicants must have the capacity for independent academic work at a high level, preferably documented through publications in international journals. Experience with the use of GIS is required. Interviews will be held with potential candidates.

Applicants must have native or near-native competence in a Scandinavian language or English.

  • A project proposal (5-10 pages) which must include the topic, relevant theory and methods and time-line. Applicants are expected to be able to complete the project during the appointment period
  • CV (summarizing education, positions, pedagogical experience, administrative experience and other qualifying activity)
  • A complete list of publications
  • Academic transcripts (university degrees only). Applicants who have not yet been awarded a PhD must document that they have submitted their doctoral thesis.

The letter of application and all supporting documents must be in either English, Norwegian or another Scandinavian language.

A sorting committee will be appointed if there are many applicants for the position.

Actual academic works should not be included at this time. After the sorting committee has completed the first stage of the review process, an expert committee will invite the most appropriate candidates to submit up to five academic works that the applicant wishes to have considered in the assessment process (a doctoral dissertation or a monograph will count as three publications).
