Associate Professor of Science Education

A permanent full-time position as Associate Professor (førsteamanuensis) (SKO 1011) of Science Education (naturfagdidaktikk) is vacant at the Department of Teacher Education and School Research (ILS).

The position will be linked to the teacher education programs at ILS (full-time and part-time undergraduate teacher training program (PPU) and PPU in the graduate teacher training program (LeP) and in Teach First Norway), to the master level in LeP, and to the PhD program. Expertise in the field of teaching Chemistry as School Subject is especially needed. Expertise in the fields of Teaching Physics, Biology and Geology as School Subjects is relevant as well. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the department’s research through participation in one of the research groups; Large-scale Educational Assessment (LEA), Teacher Professionalism and Educational Change: Practices, Purposes, Policies (TEPEC), Curriculum Studies, Leadership and Educational Governance (CLEG) and Studies of Instruction across Subjects and Competences (SISCO), or to other faculty research groups. Contribution to the efforts of ProTed - Centre of Excellence in Teacher Education is expected as well.

Description:

  • Contribute to research groups with the aim of publishing in national and international journals and developing networks
  • Participate in planning, teaching and supervision in Science Education (naturfagdidaktikk) in teacher education programs, in master courses in LeP and in the PhD program
  • Contribute to the development of the field of Science Education
  • Contribute to the efforts of ProTed, Centre of Excellence in Teacher Education
  • Administrative tasks in accordance with the applicable provisions

Qualifications

  • The applicant must be able to document research competence linked to the advertised subject area. The minimum competence requirement for the position of associate professor is a PhD in the field of Science Education.
  • Scientific publications and expertise in the field of Science Education
  • Basic teaching competence
  • Experience from the Norwegian or Scandinavian education sector (schools grade 8-13, teacher training for grade 8-13)
  • Advanced spoken and written proficiency in Norwegian (alternatively Swedish or Danish) and English
  • Personal suitability and motivation 

The criteria that will be considered are the applicant’s academic, professional, pedagogical and subject teaching (didactic) qualifications, leadership and administration qualifications, and personal qualifications including proficiency in Norwegian (alternatively Swedish or Danish) and English. Familiarity with the Norwegian or Scandinavian educational systems is essential, and formal teaching competence is required.

In the ranking of competent applicants, the whole range of qualifications will be considered, including the applicant’s ability to communicate and personal suitability. Emphasis will also be placed on the applicant’s experience and ability to attract research funding from external sources.
