University of Oslo PhD Research Fellowship in Atmospheric Sciences

Research Fellowship in Atmospheric Sciencesis is available at the Department of Geosciences, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Oslo.

Applications are invited for a 3-year Ph.D. fellowshipin atmospheric sciences at the Department of Geosciences, University of Oslo, Norway. Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in natural sciences (e.g. meteorology or a related field such as physics, or chemistry) or computational/applied mathematics (including fluid mechanics).

Description

The work of the Ph.D. scholar will be part of the project “Solar effects on natural climate variability in the North Atlantic and Arctic”, which is coordinated by Dr. Yvan Orsolini at the Norwegian Institute for Air Research and funded by the Research Council of Norway. In this project, we will 1) characterize how the 11-year solar cycle and its spectral radiance variations affect the interannual-to-decadal variability of the northern hemisphere circulation patterns, principally the North Atlantic Oscillation and the Arctic Oscillation, through stratosphere-troposphere and through ocean-atmosphere coupling, and  2) examine if energetic particle precipitation can also significantly affect the interannual-to-decadal variability of these patterns, and how it interplays with the solar radiance effect.

The University of Oslo (UiO) and NILU will collaborate closely by supervising the PhD student at UiO. The PhD student will be tasked with running the Whole-Atmosphere (0-140km) Community Climate Model (WACCM) within the the Norwegian Earth System Model (NorESM).

The position is affiliated with the Section for Meteorology and Oceanography. The research group consists of six professors, four adjunct professors, seven Ph.D. research fellows and five Post-Docs. Both the research group and NILU participates in Oslo Centre for Interdisciplinary Environmental and Social Research - CIENS.

Qualifications

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has a strategic ambition of being a leading research faculty. Candidates will be selected in accordance with this, and are expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials. Applications are encouraged from dedicated candidates with excellent writing skills. Creativity and innovation are valued as is a demonstrated high working capacity, passion for research, and self-motivation.

The purpose of the Ph.D. position is research training leading to the successful completion of a doctoral degree. The fellowship requires admission to the research-training program at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.  Applicants must have obtained undergraduate (BSc level or equivalent) and graduate (MSc level or equivalent) qualifications.  Altogether this should represent approximately five years of full time study after the completion of European Upper Secondary School or International Baccalaureate.

Demonstrated experience with any of the following should be highlighted:

  • Knowledge of computer modelling of the climate system
  • Technical expertise in scripting (Python, R, bash/shell) or programming (C++ and/or FORTRAN)
  • Evidence of independent research and writing skills

Appointment to a research fellowship is conditional upon admission to the research training program. An approved plan for the research training must be submitted no later than two month after taking up the position, and admission approved within three months.

A good command of oral and written English is required.

Applicants should submit

  • an application letter including a statement of research interest and indicating a preferred starting date
  • curriculum vitae including one set of certified copies of certificates
  • a list of published and unpublished work
  • three copies of selected scientific work (printed or non-printed) that the applicant wishes to be considered by the evaluation committee
