POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER IN STEM CELL METABOLISM

Postdoctoral Researcher in stem cell metabolism (University of Helsinki, Faculty of Environmental and Biological Sciences, Helsinki, Finland)

Dr. Jaakko Mattila’s group will be studying the role of energy metabolism in the regulation of stem cell physiology. Considering the emerging evidence on metabolic control of stem cell function, it will be important to elucidate how stem cells maintain proper metabolic status upon varying dietary and pathological conditions. Defects in stem cell control can lead to pathophysiologies, such as premature aging, tissue atrophy and cancer. Understanding the nutrient-, and metabolic-dependent control of stem cells may open safe means to prevent these conditions.

We are looking for a postdoc to join our newly founded research team. We are offering a project related to the role of energy metabolism in the intestinal stem cells. As an in vivo stem cell model, we will use intestinal stem cells of the fruit fly. The aim of the project is to unravel molecular mechanisms linking specific metabolic activity to intestinal stem cell function, i.e. division and differentiation. The project will employ the powerful genetic tools of the fruit fly combined with state-of-the-art genomics, metabolomics and imaging technologies. From the applicant we expect high motivation to conduct demanding experimental work, as well as a curiosity driven science-enthusiastic mindset. Prior fly work experience is not necessary. We will offer a meaningful, original and ambitious scientific project in an international, top-level research environment.

The position is initially available for 3 years but can be extended if necessary. The salary of the successful candidate is based on the Finnish university salary (YPJ) system on previous qualifications, experience and performance in the position. The starting salary will be between 3100 - 3400 euros/month, depending on the qualifications and experience of the candidate. A six-month trial period will be applied.

Qualifications:
A recent PhD degree (or close to completion) in physiology, cell biology, genetics or a related field. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and ability to work as a part of an interdisciplinary team.

Applicants are requested to submit their application, as one single pdf file, which includes the following documents:
- CV including contact details for at least 2 referees
- motivation letter.

Deadline for application is 31st July 2019, but review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. The position is available from 1st September 2019.

Please submit your application using the University of Helsinki Recruitment System via the link Apply for the position. Applicants who are employees of the University of Helsinki are requested to leave their application via the SAP HR portal.
