Deadline: Jun 13, 2016

The Coordinating Committee of the Southwest Seminar on Colonial Latin America invites proposals for its annual meeting, to be held at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas from October 13-15, 2016. The seminar will bring together a selected number of participants to present new scholarship and advanced works-in-progress on any period or region related to colonial Latin America.

The Seminar’s annual meetings are conceived as a venue to exchange ideas and to promote collegiality and conviviality among colonial Latin Americanists of varied backgrounds and with diverse research interests. Each presenter will discuss a pre-circulated, article-length paper of no more than 8,000 words. Jorge Cañizares-Esguerra, Alice Drysdale Sheffield Professor of History at the University of Texas at Austin, and Kris Lane, France V. Scholes Professor of Colonial Latin American History at Tulane University, will serve as senior discussants.

We invite proposals from scholars of any institution, domestic or international, at all stages of their career, including junior faculty and graduate students. Submission of individual paper abstracts should be approximately three hundred words and accompanied by an abbreviated, two-page CV. The Southwest Seminar member institutions will cover lodging, meals, and events for scholars selected to participate. Deadline for submission is June 13, 2016.

Beyond the seminar workshops, participants will have the opportunity to visit a Fort Worth rare book dealer specializing in colonial Latin Americana, and take part in a guided tour of one of the Metroplex’s renowned museums.

The Southwest Seminar is a collaborative effort among scholars located at institutions in the American Southwest, including Northern Arizona University, Texas Christian University, Texas State University, University of Arizona, University of California, San Diego, University of Texas, El Paso, and Utah Valley University.  Additional information can be found at:
